Seth Jones Makes Florida Panthers History With Record-Breaking October Performance

Seth Jones wrapped up October with 18 points — two goals, 16 assists — and in doing so broke a Florida Panthers franchise record that had stood in Sunrise for eight years. Keith Yandle's 17-point March in 2018 was the previous high-water mark for a Panthers defenseman in any calendar month. Jones cleared it Friday, adding a goal and two assists in a 5-2 win over Winnipeg. Anton Lundell scored three times to secure his first career NHL hat trick, as the Panthers won their sixth of eight games. Meanwhile, injured stars Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand missed the action, though both have recently resumed skating to progress through their recovery timelines.

Jones Rewrites the Panthers Record Book

Yandle was a different kind of defenseman — a power play specialist who ran the umbrella and fed shooters for a living. Jones is something else. His 18-point October came while playing in all situations for a team missing its two best forwards, which makes the raw number harder to dismiss as circumstantial.

Florida's offence hasn't stalled without Barkov and Marchand. That's partly on the forwards stepping up — though Lundell had previously struggled with just one goal in his first 13 games, his explosive three-point performance was the breakout they needed — but it's also on Jones controlling the pace of play shift after shift in ways that don't always show up cleanly on a scoresheet. Friday night they did. Anton Lundell's early second-period goal gave Florida a 2-0 lead, while Jones added his own goal later in the frame. His assists fed plays that didn't require heroics, just precision.

Paul Maurice confirmed this week that Marchand is about three weeks out and Barkov roughly four. The Panthers haven't been waiting around. Akira Schmid stopped 22 shots, and Lundell's second of the night came at the right moment — Winnipeg had just cut it to 3-2 through Morgan Barron, and Florida needed someone to answer. Lundell did. He later sealed it with an empty-netter at 18:21 of the third period to lock in the 5-2 win.

Winnipeg's Slide Has No Floor in Sight

Eight games without a win. The Jets are 0-6-2 in that stretch, and both losses this week came against the same team. Kyle Connor scored his 11th of the season Friday — he's been one of the few producing consistently — but Winnipeg's structural problems run deeper than any individual's output can fix.

They gave up the first two goals inside seven minutes. They got one back, gave up another before the third period was two minutes old, got another one back, and then watched Lundell put it away on the empty net. That's not a team in a shooting slump. That's a team with real defensive breakdowns and no obvious short-term solution. Carolina on Sunday is next.
