31 Years Later, Star Trek Replaces Troi's Mother & Makes Betazed More Important

John Orquiola is a TV Editor, Senior Writer, and Interviewer with a special focus on Star Trek. John has over 5,000 published articles at SR, and he has interviewed the biggest names in Star Trek on the red carpet and VIP events, among other beloved shows, movies, and franchises.

31 years after Lwaxana Troi's (Majel Barrett Roddenberry) final appearance, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will introduce all-new Betazoid mother-daughter drama. Executive produced by Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's second and final season premieres March 2027 on Paramount+.

Along with Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Lwaxana Troi might be the most famous mother in all of Star Trek. Betazed's ambassador to the United Federation of Planets, Lwaxana was the loving but domineering mother of Counselor Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis). Lwaxana was an irresistible force who usually managed to have her way aboard the USS Enterprise-D and Deep Space Nine.

Majel Barrett Roddenberry made such a powerful impression, and Deanna's mother was so memorable, that it's hard to believe that Lwaxana Troi only made nine total Star Trek appearances. Lwaxana followed her six Star Trek: The Next Generation guest spots with three on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Lwaxana Troi and Majel Barrett Roddenberry are impossible to replace, but Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will, at least, try to replicate her impact.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Introduces Tarima & Ocam’s Betazoid Mother

Rosemarie Dewitt in Starfleet Academy season 2

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 introduces Laytha Sadal, the First Lady of Betazed, played by Rosemarie DeWitt. Laytha's arrival is Starfleet Academy doing its own spin on the classic Betazoid mother-daughter relationship that Lwaxana and Deanna Troi defined on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Laytha is the wife of Betazed's President, Emerin Sadal (Anthony Natale), and she is the mother of Tarima (Zoe Steiner) and Ocam (Romeo Carere). Laytha's arrival is a reminder that the children of Betazed's most powerful family attend Starfleet Academy, and the pressures Tarima and Ocam carry go beyond their studies to become Starfleet Officers.

Tarima feels she is a problem child. Her burgeoning psychic abilities exceed most Betazoids' and losing control of her powers led to an accident that turned their father deaf. In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6, "Come, Let's Away," Tarima unleashing her powers to save her friends sent her into a coma. After recovering on Betazed, Tarima returned to San Francisco, where she was involuntarily transferred from the War College to Starfleet Academy.

Meanwhile, Ocam Sadal has been reliable comic relief and supportive to his sister, but there must be more to Ocam than meets the eye. Laytha coming to Starfleet Academy isn't just a new version of Deanna and Lwaxana Troi. but it's also an opportunity to reveal more about Ocam, and how he relates to his powerful mother and father beyond his role as a dutiful son.

Starfleet Academy Made Betazed More Important To Star Trek’s Universe Than Ever

Betazed was introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation, but Star Trek: Starfleet Academy makes the Trois and Sadals' home world more important than ever. Previously, Betazed was an influential Federation member world, but wasn't pivotal to galactic politics. Starfleet Academy refashioned Betazed to become central to the Federation in the late 32nd century.

In the 24th century, Betazed was conquered by the Dominion off-screen during Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's Dominion War.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 2, "Beta Test," revealed that Betazed broke away from the Federation after The Burn and built a protective psychic wall around its planetary system. In the post-Burn era, Betazed negotiated its return to the Federation, which acquiesced by moving the Federation capital to Betazed.

Nearly all of Starfleet's armada assembled at Betazed for the Federation capital's opening ceremonies in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1's finale. As the seat of the Federation's government, Betazed is now the ultimate power-broker world and can determine the future of the galaxy as the 33rd century approaches.

Perhaps Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2 will bring audiences to Betazed to see the Sadals' homeworld for the first time in the 32nd century, while evoking memories of Lwaxana and Deanna Troi with Laytha and Tarima Sadal.
