Teen charged by counter-terror police over alleged plot to kill

Queensland’s counter-terrorism squad has charged a teenager after they were tipped off about alleged plans to maim and kill.

Eighteen-year-old Alexander Smith from South Gladstone, in central Queensland, was arrested on Friday and charged with one count of planning to cause death or grievous bodily harm.

“It will be alleged that the man was making plans for acts of violence, and a tip was received from the National Security Hotline, prompting police investigations,” a police spokesperson said.

Police have opposed Smith’s bail, and he was expected to appear before Gladstone Magistrates Court on Saturday

“The Queensland Police Service reassures the community that there are no known ongoing direct threats to the community or any upcoming events at this time,” the police spokesperson said.

“The safety and security of our communities remain the service’s highest priority.

“The QPS continues to work in close collaboration with our federal and state counterparts to ensure the safety of all Queenslanders.”
