Robin Uthappa has been appointed batting coach of Mumbai Indians, adding another new face to a support staff undergoing a significant overhaul ahead of the IPL 2027 mini auction.
Uthappa was a part of the Indian squad that won the World T20 in 2007.
The five-time champion has been reshaping its coaching setup in recent weeks. On Thursday, it parted ways with bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey, as well as fielding coach Carl Hopkinson.
The latest departures come days after Mahela Jayawardene stepped down as head coach, with Kieron Pollard slotting into the role. Uthappa’s appointment marks another significant addition to a revamped backroom staff.
Mumbai was the first franchise to win five IPL titles, lifting the trophy in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. However, its recent fortunes have been a far cry from that golden run. It has not reached the final in the last six seasons and endured a ninth-place finish among 10 teams in IPL 2026.
With the December 16 player auction in Goa approaching, the franchise has little time to settle its new-look setup. Teams must submit their retention and release lists by November 15.
