News24 | Another Proteas quick ruled out for Australia ODIs

• Proteas fast bowler Kwena Maphaka has been ruled out of the ODI series against Australia.
• On the eve of the opening ODI against Australia in Durban, the Proteas are now without Maphaka, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Ottniel Baartman.

The Proteas’ pace stocks have thinned out even further after Kwena Maphaka was ruled out of the ODI series against Australia.

The Proteas face Australia in a three-match ODI series, with the opening one-dayer taking place on Thursday at Kingsmead in Durban. Play starts at 10:00.

The blows keep coming for the Proteas’ pace battery, with Maphaka adding to a mounting hamstring injury toll in the attack.

Cricket SA confirmed on Wednesday morning that Maphaka sustained a right hamstring strain during training in preparation for the series.

“(He) will undergo assessments to determine the extent of the injury.”

Boland paceman Lizaad Williams has been named as his replacement and will join the squad on Wednesday in Durban.

That leaves the Proteas leaning on all-rounders Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch, as well as Gerald Coetzee to lead the attack, while Duan Jansen, Nqobani Mokoena and Williams have been called up as injury cover in the 16-player ODI squad.

Frontline bowler Kagiso Rabada is still recovering from a hamstring injury and is hoping to be fit for the upcoming three-match Test series against Australia.

Last week, Ngidi experienced discomfort during the opening First Class Series match between the Titans and Dolphins, with his availability for the Test series also in doubt.

Baartman sustained a left hamstring injury in the same four-day match for the Dolphins.

The last time the Proteas faced Australia on home soil in ODIs was in 2023, when they fought back from 2-0 down to clinch the five-match series 3-2.

Meanwhile, Australia’s ‌bowling attack for the ODIs ‌has been considerably strengthened ⁠with captain Pat Cummins and ⁠Mitchell Starc joining the squad, along with all-rounder Jack Edwards, although the visitors are likely to rotate their Test quicks across the ODI series to manage their playing loads.
