QC school gets detention basin under covered court to curb flooding

A detention basin has been installed beneath a covered court at Magsambong Elementary School in Quezon City to help reduce flooding during heavy rains.

In a Super Radyo dzBB report by Luisito Santos on Sunday, the newly constructed drainage system was described as having a total capacity of 200 cubic meters, equivalent to 1,000 200-liter water drums.

Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte said the detention basin was installed to help prevent flooding at the school, which is regularly submerged during heavy downpours.

The Quezon City government previously launched a gravity-operated underground water detention basin beneath a barangay covered court.

Reports later showed that despite continuous heavy rains brought by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) in August, several areas in the city experienced reduced flooding following the installation of detention basins.

A GMA News explainer said a detention basin serves as a temporary storage facility for rainwater, helping prevent large volumes of water from quickly flowing into low-lying communities.

Structural Engineer Juan Paolo Bersamina said detention basins are considered an effective flood mitigation solution for highly urbanized areas.

However, he noted that connecting disconnected or misaligned drainage lines from different locations to a single detention basin presents a significant engineering challenge. — Lyjah Tiffany Bonzo/MCG, GMA News
