Edo varsity lecturer dies after hotel encounter with sex worker

A senior lecturer at the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after allegedly collapsing in a hotel room following an encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.
Mr Uwuigbe reportedly died on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
The police in Edo are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death and have arrested three people in connection with the incident.
The police spokesperson in Edo, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the development to journalists on Tuesday.
Ms Ikoedem said the command received a report at about 8 p.m. on 5 October that Mr Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the woman, identified as Angela Jacob.
According to her, the lecturer later sent Ms Jacob out to purchase water for him.
“When she returned, she found him lying dead in the room,” the police spokesperson said.
Ms Ikoedem said the hotel owner, the manager and the sex worker had been arrested and were assisting the police with the investigation.
She said Mr Uwuigbe’s body had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
The police have not disclosed the cause of death, and the command has not indicated that the sexual encounter itself caused the lecturer’s death.
University confirms lecturer’s identity
The university’s spokesperson, Mike Aladenika, confirmed that Mr Uwuigbe was an AAU staff member but stressed that the incident occurred off campus.
“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life,” Mr Aladenika told PM News.
He also said the woman involved was not a university student.
“The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
