Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4, Episode 7 - "Like Chronitons Through The Hourglass"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds introduced an alternate future for Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), yet he cannot avoid his destiny to come in Star Trek: The Original Series. Directed by Anna Dokoza and written by Dana Horgan and Bill Wolkoff, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 7 finally lets Pike deal with the reality he lost, where he had a wife and daughter.

Star Trek: The Original Series' season 1 two-parter, "The Menagerie," revealed the tragedy of Captain Pike. A heroic act to save Starfleet cadets irradiates Fleet Captain Pike (Sean Kenney), disfiguring and leaving Chris disabled. Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) risks his career to bring Pike to Talos IV, where Chris was allowed to live the rest of his life in a fantasy constructed by the psychic Talosians.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1's finale, "A Quality of Mercy," showed a very different future for Admiral Pike, whose decision to remain as Captain of the USS Enterprise changed the timeline. The events of Star Trek: The Original Series' "Balance of Terror" played out differently, with the United Federation of Planets mired in a forever war with the Romulans. However, this alternate future was rendered null and void,

Captain Pike Lived An Alternate Future With A Wife & Daughter In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The heartbreaking final moments of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 7, "Like Chronitons Through the Hourglass" sees Captain Pike grieve the loss of his wife, Captain Marie Batel (Melanie Scrofano), and their daughter, Juliet (Anna Mirodin). Pike and Batel had a family in an alternate future reality Marie created in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3's finale.

Batel was destined to become the Beholder, a powerful being who protects the universe from an ancient evil called the Vezda. Before becoming the Beholder, Marie gifted Chris and herself with a life together, where they married and raised a daughter, living happily until Batel's death. Pike and Batel then returned to the present day, where Marie said goodbye and became the imprisoned Vezda's eternal warden.

Technically, the life Chris and Marie shared "never happened," but Pike retains all of his memories. For Chris, it was all real, which is what his therapist, Dr. Eleanor Chivers (Diedre Hall), counseled. Pike's memories of Juliet became armor in "Like Chronitons Through the Hourglass," as his latent memories of having a daughter, and saying goodbye to Juliet, kept him from falling under the thrall of Trelane (Rhys Darby) when the Q turned the USS Enterprise into a soap opera.

Captain Pike grieved Marie Batel, but he did not fully face the pain of losing her, their daughter, and their life together. When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 began, Pike sublimated his feelings by leading the Starship Enterprise on constant missions, burning everyone out. This is why they all desperately needed shore leave in Strange New Worlds season 4, episode 3, "Human Best Friend."

Captain Pike’s Destiny In Star Trek: The Original Series Is Unavoidable

Sean Kenney as Captain Pike in The Menagerie

Reminiscent of Star Trek: The Next Generation's "The Inner Light," Captain Pike's alternate future with Batel was a gift to him from Marie, who knows his inevitable destiny yet to come after he gives up command of the USS Enterprise. No one can take the memories of being married to Marie and raising Juliet from Chris, and they add an extra dimension to what happens to Pike in Star Trek: The Original Series.

Pike discovered that if he tries to avoid the accident that disfigures him, the universe will transfer that fate to Spock.

Captain Pike not only knows his destiny is to be bound to a wheelchair, which he learned in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, but he also learned that it's unavoidable. In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1's finale, Pike discovered that if he tries to evade the accident that disfigures him, the universe will transfer that fate to Spock (Ethan Peck). To protect his Vulcan friend, who is vitally important to the cosmos, Pike accepted that he must accept his tragic fate.

"The Menagerie" establishes that Fleet Captain Pike will live the best life possible on Talos IV. The Talosians consider him an important figure after Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) and the USS Enterprise visited Talos IV in Star Trek's original, rejected pilot episode, "The Cage." The Talosians will use their powerful psychic abilities to let Pike live in a perpetual illusion, where he is young and healthy with Vina (Susan Oliver), the lone human woman living on Talos IV.

However, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has added extra context and dimensions to Captain Pike's destiny. Marie, Juliet, and their happy life together will always be a part of Chris. Pike still has what will presumably be an idyllic fantasy future with Vina on Talos IV to come, but that won't negate the memories of Christopher Pike's lost wife and daughter.
