3M (MMM) reported better-than-expected third-quarter earnings Tuesday as the industrial conglomerate benefited from stronger organic sales, improved productivity and expanding profit margins. The company also raised its full-year earnings outlook.

Shares of 3M (MMM) were little changed in premarket trading Tuesday. The stock had gained 4.7% for the year through Monday's closing price.

The Saint Paul, Minnesota-based company reported third-quarter sales of $6.6 billion, up 1% from a year earlier. Revenue was in line with Wall Street's consensus estimate of $6.61 billion. Adjusted sales increased 4.2% to $6.6 billion, including 3.3% organic growth.

Adjusted earnings rose 12% to $2.50 a share from $2.23 a year earlier, beating analysts' consensus estimate of $2.38 a share.

Net income increased on a per-share basis, with earnings rising to $2.63 a share from $1.55 a share a year earlier. The earnings announcement did not disclose the corresponding dollar amounts of net income, preventing a complete year-over-year comparison.

The results suggest that 3M (MMM), whose products include Post-it Notes, Scotch tape and Scotch-Brite cleaning products, is making progress in its effort to improve profitability after years of restructuring and legal challenges. For investors, the acceleration in organic sales growth and continued margin expansion are encouraging signs that operational changes are producing results. However, the company's ability to sustain revenue growth while managing litigation costs and its exit from PFAS manufacturing remains an important consideration.

Profit margins expand as productivity improves

The company's adjusted operating margin increased to 26.2% from 25.1% a year earlier, an improvement of 110 basis points. Its reported operating margin rose to 23.7% from 22.2%.

"We delivered another quarter of strong results," Chairman and Chief Executive William Brown said in the earnings announcement.

Brown attributed the performance to productivity improvements, structural changes and the development of new technologies. The company has been working to simplify operations and improve efficiency while investing in products intended to support longer-term growth.

Reported organic sales increased just 0.2%, compared with adjusted organic growth of 3.3%. The adjusted figures exclude manufactured PFAS products, reflecting the company's ongoing exit from those operations.

3M (MMM) also changed its adjusted financial reporting to exclude amortization of intangible assets. The company said the revision increased the prior-year adjusted operating margin by approximately 40 basis points and adjusted earnings by about 4 cents a share. The change did not materially affect year-over-year comparisons because both periods were presented on the same basis.Cash from operating activities totaled $500 million during the quarter, while adjusted free cash flow reached $1.2 billion. The company returned $600 million to shareholders through dividends and stock repurchases.

3M raises full-year earnings forecast

3M (MMM) raised its 2026 adjusted earnings outlook to a range of $9.10 to $9.15 a share, incorporating its updated accounting presentation and the acquisition of Madison Fire & Rescue. The Wall Street consenus forecast is $8.93 a share.

The company expects adjusted total sales growth of more than 4.5% for the year, including adjusted organic growth exceeding 3.5%.

Management also forecast adjusted operating cash flow of approximately $5.9 billion and adjusted free cash flow of about $4.8 billion.

The revised outlook reflects the company's performance during the first nine months of 2026 and its expectations for the remainder of the year.

Data center partnerships create new opportunities

Beyond its traditional industrial and consumer products, 3M (MMM) is expanding its presence in data center technology through an agreement with Amazon.

The companies announced an expanded commercial relationship involving optical connectivity and other data center products. Under the agreement, Amazon received a warrant to purchase up to 3.2 million shares of 3M (MMM) common stock, contingent on achieving $6 billion in cumulative sales over seven years and meeting other milestones.

The company also announced a collaboration with Genius Electronic Optical to develop and manufacture Expanded Beam Optics technology. As part of the arrangement, 3M (MMM) plans to acquire an approximately 4.7% equity stake in the optical technology manufacturer.

Other initiatives include a partnership with Chinese display manufacturer BOE to develop next-generation display technologies and a collaboration with golf equipment maker PING on materials science applications.

3M (MMM) also introduced a reflective cooling film for commercial vehicles and rail applications. The product is designed to reduce heat buildup in vehicle interiors.

Legal liabilities remain a consideration

Despite the improvement in operating performance, 3M (MMM) continues to face financial and regulatory risks associated with PFAS chemicals and its historical Combat Arms Earplugs business.

The company recorded a charge equivalent to 19 cents a share for significant litigation and PFAS exit costs during the third quarter, matching the year-earlier amount.

Its reported earnings also benefited from a 60-cent-a-share increase in the value of its remaining ownership interest in Solventum, the health care business it spun off in 2024. That compared with a 13-cent-a-share reduction in the year-earlier quarter.

The difference underscores why adjusted earnings may provide investors with a clearer view of the company's underlying operating performance.

With margins improving and management raising its earnings outlook, investors will be watching whether 3M (MMM) can translate its restructuring gains into sustained organic revenue growth while containing legal expenses and generating cash for shareholders.
