Benin Ligue 1: Eguma Targets Extended Unbeaten Run As Buffles Du Borgou Visit Espoir FC

Translate

Stanley Eguma, head coach of Benin Ligue 1 side Buffles du Borgou, says his team is determined to extend its unbeaten start to the 2026/2027 season when it travels to face Espoir FC in Saturday’s Matchday Four encounter, Completesports.com reports.

Buffles du Borgou currently lead the Benin Ligue 1 standings with nine points from three matches, having won all their opening fixtures.

The team began its campaign with a 3-1 victory over Ayema FC on September 27, followed by a 1-0 away win against FC Loto on October 3. Eguma’s men maintained their winning streak with another 1-0 triumph over Djeffa FC on October 11.

With Espoir FC next on the schedule, Eguma expressed confidence in his players’ ability to secure another victory, insisting that hard work and performance remain the keys to success in the Benin top flight.

Eguma Targets Another Win

Speaking to Completesports.com from his base in the West African country on Wednesday night, the former Rivers United coach said his team was focused on the task ahead.

“One very important fact here is that your result reflects how well you play in the game,” Eguma said.

“Not taking away the element of luck, but here in the Benin Republic Ligue 1, if you work hard, you get results. There is no home or away factor.

“So, we’re looking forward to doing well against Espoir and taking the three points.

“Having not lost a game so far in the Benin Premier Ligue 1 is a motivation in itself for the players. However, we are not getting carried away because the season has only just started.

“With hard work, commitment, determination and focus, as well as taking the games one at a time, we will see where it takes us at the end of the day.”

Experience In Benin Republic

Eguma, who was part of Enyimba’s coaching staff during their historic 2004 CAF Champions League triumph, previously managed Dolphins FC, which later became Rivers United, before taking charge of Buffles du Borgou ahead of the 2026/2027 Benin Ligue 1 campaign.

Reflecting on his experience in Benin so far, the Nigerian tactician praised the country’s general atmosphere, infrastructure and organisation, particularly at football venues.

According to Eguma, the security situation, road network and match-day environment have made his experience in the country a positive one.

“You don’t travel with the fear of being kidnapped. You don’t travel with the fear of insecurity, police harassment or whatever.

“Here, you can plan your movements and travels, and you arrive at your appointments on time because the roads are in excellent condition. There are no checkpoints and all that.

“You can’t believe it, but I have not seen any policeman at the stadium since I arrived here, not even stadium stewards. That’s how organised the system is here.

“When you play away, there is nothing like poor officiating. Teams win away games, sometimes even more than they win at home. A team can win 5-0 or 6-0 away from home.
