10 Superheroes Whose Greatest Powers Came From Freak Accidents

Translate

Some superheroes are born with extraordinary abilities, while others make use of their brilliant minds and fortune to fight crime and defend the world. However, there are plenty of superheroes who unexpectedly gain their powers and abilities through freak accidents that could have been avoided. Whether through radiation exposure or experiments gone wrong, these heroes’ lives were forever changed in an instant.

Across Marvel and DC Comics, unpredictable events transformed many heroes and permanently altered the course of their lives. However, not every accident resulted in the same outcome. While some were devastating, others were strangely fortunate, making each case a unique and significant turning point in these characters’ path to heroism.

Firestorm

DC hero Firestorm throws a punch

Firestorm first debuted in 1978 in Firestorm, The Nuclear Man #1. Originally, Firestorm was the culmination of two very different people who were merged together to create the hero. Ronnie Raymond began as an impulsive teenager, and Martin Stein was a brilliant physicist before the two became a hero capable of manipulating matter and generating nuclear energy.

The two were fused together following a catastrophic reactor explosion at the Hudson Nuclear Power Plant. Following the event, Ronnie found himself in control of their shared body while Stein remained a voice in his mind. While the two occasionally clashed, for the most part, they stood as an extraordinarily powerful hero.

Beast

Hank McCoy, better known as Beast, is a founding member of the X-Men who is known for both his intellect and formidable strength. His original mutation included oversized hands and feet as well as remarkable strength. However, he later evolved into the furred, beast-like hero that fans recognize following a bizarre incident during one of his experiments.

While his original mutation was present at birth, his following transformation occurred when Hank drank an experimental serum that was supposed to temporarily activate latent mutations in order to prevent his research from being stolen. Unfortunately, he miscalculated, and the result was a permanent transformation that gave him fur, claws, and fangs.

Plastic Man

Plastic Man DC Comics

Plastic Man’s true name is Patrick O’Brian, and he started out as a small-time criminal before he became one of DC’s strangest superheroes. With his elastic body, he can stretch, flatten, reshape, and transform into pretty much anything he imagines, all while being immune to bullets or other major impacts.

How he got his powers is almost as outlandish as the powers themselves. During a heist at a chemical plant, O’Brian was shot and drenched in industrial chemicals, leaving him gravely injured, but rather than falling to his wounds, the exposure fundamentally altered his body. His cellular structure was permanently transformed, giving him the elasticity to become the hero Plastic Man.

Jessica Jones

Jessica Jones is a former hero known as Jewel, who, after a traumatic incident, left behind her days as a hero to become a private investigator. Compared to most other heroes, Jessica views her powers as a burden and struggles with isolation and alcoholism, making her far removed from the traditional ideal that most people think of when picturing heroes.

Her powers stem from a devastating accident that killed her family and left her in a coma for months after their car collided with a military vehicle that was transporting radioactive chemicals. When Jessica recovered, she found that she possessed superhuman strength, durability, and flight.

Cyborg

Victor Stone is a founding member of the New Teen Titans and later a founding member of the Justice League in the New 52 era. He is best known as Cyborg, a young man with cybernetic powers including superhuman strength and durability, advanced weaponry, the ability to connect or hack into almost any computer system, and more depending on the comic.

While his powers come from his cybernetic augmentations, the event that led to it was a devastating accident that nearly took his life. In order to save him, Victor’s father, Silas Stone, rebuilt him with experimental technology, transforming him into the cybernetic hero that fans know.

Fantastic Four

Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm form the unique superhero team, Fantastic Four, that stands out in comparison to other major teams given the fact that they’re more than just teammates but also a family. As Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and the Thing, respectively, they each bring a unique set of skills to the team, making them a well-rounded team.

Their transformation into these heroes took place during an experimental space mission where they were unexpectedly bombarded by a powerful cosmic radiation storm. The exposure to it altered each of their bodies in different ways, making their origins as heroes the result of a freak accident that none of the team could have ever predicted.

Daredevil

Matt Murdock, better known as Daredevil, is a blind lawyer who protects Hell’s Kitchen as one of Marvel’s most skilled street-level heroes. Using his exceptional martial arts skills and heightened remaining senses, Daredevil fights to protect his neighborhood from corruption and crime, while during the day, he serves as a defense attorney.

Matt’s powers stem from an act of selflessness that nearly cost him his life as a child. He pushes a stranger out of the way of an oncoming truck carrying hazardous radioactive material, only to be splashed by its contents, permanently losing his sight while his other four senses became amplified, giving him sharp, radar-like perception of the world around him.

The Flash

The mantle of The Flash, one of DC’s fastest and most recognizable heroes, has been taken up by various people, including Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, and Wally West, all of whom inherited their speed through freak accidents. Jay Garrick, the original Flash during the Golden Age, gained his powers after taking a break in a research lab, knocking over a beaker of hard water, and inhaling the fumes.

Next, Barry Allen and Wally West gained their powers in a similar manner. Both were hit by an improbable lightning strike that also happened to hit a rack of nearby chemicals that drenched them. Together, these transformed them into conduits for the Speed Force. While there are other characters who have operated as the Flash, these three are the ones who gained their power following unexpected events in a lab.

The Hulk

Bruce Banner is a brilliant nuclear physicist whose life is forever changed by the monstrous alter ego created within him. When under intense emotional stress, Banner transforms into a massive, green superhuman creature complete with immense strength and durability, with his power often increasing alongside his anger.

These transformations began during a military test involving an experimental gamma bomb. When a teenager accidentally entered the testing area, Banner rushed in to save him, shielding him from the blast and subsequently absorbing a massive dose of gamma radiation that permanently altered his body by creating the Hulk.

Spider-Man

Peter Parker stands as one of Marvel’s most well-known, recognizable, and popular superheroes to date. He starts out as an intelligent but socially awkward teenager whose life is changed after gaining superhuman strength, agility, wall-crawling, and the ability to sense danger following a bite from a radioactive spider, or genetically modified depending on the version of the story.

When the spider bites Peter, it fundamentally alters his physiology, granting him spider-like abilities that allow him to become a hero. Had he been anywhere else, or had the spider never been released or lost, Peter Parker’s story would have been very different, and he never would have become the superhero fans know and love.
