Homes evacuated and roads closed as bomb squad searches property in Sheffield

Translate

Dozens of homes have been evacuated and several roads closed as a bomb squad searches a house in Sheffield as part of an investigation into potential explosive substances.

A 36-year-old woman from the property on Mapplebeck Road in High Green was charged in connection with the incident under the Explosive Substances Act on Monday and was remanded in custody.

There has been a police presence at the house since 11 September while a forensic search is conducted by specialist officers.

South Yorkshire Police said that a discovery on Tuesday meant it was “necessary” to evacuate nearby properties to enable emergency services and specialists to ensure safety.

Assistant Chief Constable Ian Proffitt said: “We do not underestimate the impact on local residents. We understand you’ll have many questions about why this has happened, and while active court proceedings limit what we can say, I can assure you this is for your safety.”

He added: “The search, led by specialists, has been carefully progressing to ensure that our actions do not create risks to lives or to properties.”

Road closures were put in place on Mapplebeck Road, Griffiths Road, School Road, Worrall Road, Beechwood Road, Hawthorne Road, Entwhistle Road and Greenwood Road.

A cordon on Mapplebeck Road is expected to remain in place throughout Friday so emergency services and specialist agencies can ensure the affected property and surrounding homes are safe, the force added.

Police said no injuries have been reported and colleagues from other emergency services were at the scene as a precaution.

In a statement, the force said: “We don’t underestimate the impact this has had on those affected and want to thank residents for their continued patience, understanding and cooperation.

“Throughout this incident, emergency services, the local authority, health partners and other agencies have been working closely together to support residents.

“This has included providing assistance for those requiring medication or healthcare support, and arranging accommodation for anyone unable to stay with family or friends.

“We understand how challenging this situation is for local people and remain committed to ensuring everyone affected receives the support they need while this important safety work continues. We will provide further updates when we are able to do so.”

Sheffield City Council has set up a contact point for displaced residents, and those in need of help have been asked to call the council on 0114 293 0111.
