Marvel's X-Men lore has a powerful new team headed by Magneto, combining several of the mightiest superhumans in existence. Here's the full roster, as well as the team's surprising name and matching costumes.

Part of X-Men lore from the very beginning, Magneto has been a nemesis, ally and leader to Marvel's mutants at different times in their canon. In the modern day, he's even a member of Cyclops' X-Men roster, albeit still as a lethal wildcard unafraid to kill when mutant lives are on the line.

However, in Marvel's new 'Midnight' continuity, Magneto isn't just a member of the X-Men - he's the elder statesman of mutantkind, heading a vital faction known as the 'House of X.'

Magneto, aka Max Eisenhardt

x-men midnight's magneto

Taking place in a world ravaged by vampire warfare, Midnight: X-Men #1 introduces Magneto's faction, from Jonathan Hickman, Matteo Della Fonte, Arthur Hesli and Cory Petit. In a world where the majority of mutants appear to have been turned into undead 'Empyres,' Magneto has gathered together the remaining mutants under his leadership.

Magneto is shown in a skyscraper base with a group identified as the 'House of X.' Despite everything mutants have suffered from vampires, Magneto has signed his group up to a compact - a peace treaty that stops his team from moving against vampires (and potentially empyres) directly.

Magneto manipulates metal balls in Midnight X-Men #1

Bearded and exhausted, Magneto still holds sway over his team, but it's clear he's chafing against his commitment to peace in a world where powerful mutants including Storm, Iceman and Jean Grey have been turned into undead monsters.

Magneto's family have sometimes been known as the 'House of M' in Marvel lore, with 'House of X' referring more to his rival and friend Xavier. The name suggests that Magneto sees himself as carrying on Xavier's legacy in this timeline.

Internal art and variant covers for the issue show Magneto surrounded by balls of metal. With Johnny Desjardins' variant cover showing Magneto's helmet with claw marks, it's possible this isn't just any metal - did Magneto strip the adamantium from an undead Wolverine? Adamantium is listed as a major weakness of vampires, making this even more likely.

Unus, aka Gunther Bain, aka Angelo Unuscione

x-men midnight's unus

One of the oldest and most powerful enemies of the X-Men, Unus 'the Untouchable' has the mutant ability to create near-impenetrable force fields. In a world where a single bite can turn a mutant undead, his powers are one of the House of X's greatest weapons, and it's possible that he works full-time protecting the team's base from outside attack.

The comic implies that Unus is Magneto's spymaster, acting as a source of intel on rebel human groups and vampire nests. Even before he was a mutant, Unus was a criminal, and his information may come from old contacts in the criminal underworld.

Toad, aka Mortimer Toynbee

x-men midnight's toad

One of Magneto's first ever recruits to the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the hyper-acrobatic Toad remains loyal even in a world ravaged by a vampiric uprising. Toad has been shown to have various powers in Marvel lore, from his prehensile tongue to the ability to spit fast-hardening mucus, but nothing that would make him particularly adept against vampires.

When Unus' information is questioned in Midnight: X-Men #1, Toad is strangely defensive of his ally. It's possible that this represents a schism in the House of X between those who merely fight in Magneto's name and those the Master of Magnetism considers family.

The Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff

x-men midnight's scarlet witch

A powerful witch, Wanda Maximoff's mutant status and relation to Magneto were both retconned in 2014's AXIS event, though it's unclear whether this applies in Midnight canon. Whatever the biology, it's clear Wanda is part of Magneto's collective 'family' in this world, alongside her brother Quicksilver and Magneto's biological daughter Polaris.

Able to wield Chaos Magic, Scarlet Witch has direct access to the building blocks of reality, famously all but erasing mutants from existence in 2005's House of M. It's highly likely that Midnight will explore the possibility of her doing the same with vampires. Wanda is the biggest gun of the House of X.

Quicksilver, aka Pietro Maximoff

midnight x-men's quicksilver

One of the fastest superhumans alive, Quicksilver is Magneto's eyes on the ground, spying on rival factions and using his speed to ensure the House of X is never caught violating the terms of its compact.

Like Wanda, Quicksilver lost both his mutant status and his relation to Magneto in 2014, but may not have this information in Midnight. Scarlet Witch's wellbeing is often presented as Quicksilver's main motivation, and he's likely to function as her bodyguard in a world where any and every faction will want to claim her power.

Polaris, aka Lorna Dane

midnight x-men's polaris

Magneto's biological daughter has a slightly lesser version of his control over magnetism. Polaris seems to be the member of the House of X most concerned with the compact, warning her family/team that "the peace must hold."

Like the rest of Magneto's team, she's shown in a matching gray uniform. Is the color scheme a matter of dignity, or do these costumes have metallic elements that Magneto and Polaris can weaponize in an emergency?

Havok, aka Alex Summers

x-men midnight's havok-1

A former X-Man and the brother of Cyclops, Havok is also the longtime romantic partner of Polaris, and is likely included in the House of X due to her membership.

An incredibly powerful mutant, Havok can create and control powerful blasts of superheated plasma. One of the most powerful mutants of all time in offensive terms, Havok wields immense energetic power, and may be uniquely suited to killing vampires, given his plasma has often been compared to the substance of the Sun.

Key Ally: Cyclops, The Last X-Man

A bearded Cyclops engages his visor in Midnight X-Men #1

Cyclops is decidedly not a member of the House of X, however he's a crucial ally in the world of Midnight. Having not signed up to the compact, Scott Summers spends his time saving innocents from vampires and empyres, happily killing former friends and foes alike.

In Midnight: X-Men #1, it's implied that Magneto feeds information to Cyclops so he can save a group of human rebels from an empyre attack led by the undead Gambit. The encounter reveals that Cyclops has a bounty on his head that various empyres are keen to collect, making it clear why Magneto won't officially ally himself with the mutant who is considered "the last X-Man."

cyclops vs vampires in x-men midnight

Midnight: X-Men appears to draw a hard line between Cyclops and Magneto, with Max's House of X taking up a defensive stance to save the last mutants and Scott's X-Men (a team of one, at least in the first issue) aggressively pursuing and slaying the undead.

As Marvel lays out the unique status quo of its Midnight universe, the X-Men have been decimated by vampiric predators, with most of the franchise's iconic heroes becoming the undead. In the ruins, Magneto's version of the X-Men cautiously attempt to safeguard the remaining mutants, secretly working with Cyclops to bring down the superhuman undead who plague this world.

Midnight: X-Men #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
