Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder's documentary You Can See Everything has put Elizabeth Holmes' prison sentence and release back in the limelight. The 2026 nearly 3-hour documentary is directly tied to the Theranos founder's time in prison thanks to the specific timing of when filming took place.
The first half of the twisty documentary focused on the final 34 days Holmes had with her family before going to prison. She was previously found guilty of four counts of defrauding investors, three counts of wire fraud, and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. You Can See Everything shows Holmes, her husband Billy Evans, and their children living together in California before she had to go away.
Holmes' imprisonment still defines the second half of You Can See Everything's Oscar-hopeful execution, as Fielder's inability to directly communicate with her shifts the documentary in some significant ways. The film shows glimpses of her time in prison, such as still getting to spend time with Billy and their kids during visits on the weekend.
With a sentence of over 11 years, Holmes still has years to go before she's free. As of You Can See Everything's release, she's currently expected to be released from prison in 2030, but that could change.
Elizabeth Holmes' Prison Sentence & Release Timeline
Holmes' prison sentence officially began on May 30, 2023, when she reported to the Federal Prison Camp in Bryan, Texas. She was originally sentenced to 11 years and 3 months in prison, giving her a projected release in August 2034.
After only six weeks in prison, Holmes' sentence was reduced by nearly two years. The Federal Bureau of Prisons (via AP News) updated her expected release to December 29, 2032, due to her good behavior to that point and an expectation that she would continue acting that way.
Holmes' sentencing got more good news in March 2026. Judge Davila reduced her sentence by 12 months to adhere to revised sentencing guidelines due to findings that the investors she was convicted of defrauding did not suffer any hardships from their loss (via InvestmentNews).
The most recent update for Holmes' release from prison has her scheduled to be free on February 22, 2030. This date came from a September 2026 letter from the Federal Bureau of Prisons about her being approved to transfer to a halfway house in 2027 (via ABC News).
If Holmes is released from prison in February 2030, she will only serve 6 years, 8 months, and 23 days of her original 11 years and 3 months' sentence.
Will Elizabeth Holmes Get Out Of Prison Earlier?
While the 2030 release is the most recent update, there is a chance that Holmes is released even earlier. This is because of her upcoming transfer to the Austin Transitional Center halfway house in Del Valle, Texas.
Halfway houses are designed to help people transition from an institutional setting to complete freedom. People are typically there for only 3 to 6 months, with residency in many cases prohibited from lasting longer than 1 year.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons' approval of Holmes' transfer to the halfway house did not confirm a further reduced sentence, but that does appear to be on the table given the normal use of these institutions. It is quite possible that Holmes could wind up being out of prison and the halfway house by sometime in 2028, then, possibly just two years after You Can See Everything's rave response.
In such a scenario, Elizabeth Holmes would serve less than half of her original sentence. Whether that does come to fruition remains to be seen, as does what the Theranos founder's life will look like once she is free again, especially in light of how You Can See Everything tells her story.
