Andrew Garfield’s New Action Movie Sets Digital Release After Historic Box Office Low

Andrew Garfield's The Uprising will soon be available to watch at home.

The historical action thriller explores the 1381 Peasants' Revolt in England, with Garfield playing Ploughman, an ordinary farmer who becomes one of the key leading figures of the revolution. The film was released in theaters on September 10 and set a historic box office low for Garfield, with the $3.31 million domestic opening weekend performance being lower than any of the actor's wide release debuts prior to 2026.

Universal has now announced that The Uprising will be released on digital platforms on September 29, without ads or any required subscriptions. The digital debut is set more than a month before the movie's physical media release via 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on November 3. The digital release date comes less than a month after the theatrical premiere and the record-low domestic box office for Garfield. The box office performance has continued to struggle after the opening weekend, with the domestic total at $6.46 million and $7.76 million as of this writing. It was made on a reported production budget of $20 million, meaning that it will not break even, let alone make a profit.

With a 55% critics' score and 64% audience score, the overall reception was mixed, but ScreenRant's The Uprising review was overwhelmingly positive. Brandon Zachary gave it a rating of eight out of 10 stars and wrote that the movie "succeeds both as a cinematic epic and as a heartbreaking story about how humanity's best and worst qualities shape society and history on a fundamental level." He also praised Garfield's performance and how timely the film and its themes feel despite adapting a historical event set in 1381.

In the weeks leading up The Uprising's theatrical release, the marketing sparked some confusion on X by posting the tagline The Rise of Robin Hood and an updated synopsis of the plot being that the Peasants' Revolt "helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood." The movie had not been previously marketed as having anything to do with Robin Hood.

With the Robin Hood confusion and disappointing box office now in the past, the movie is getting a fresh start through its digital release, where it has the potential to reach more audiences. The bonus features also provide another reason to watch, from deleted scenes featuring Garfield's Ploughman to behind-the-scenes looks into authentic casting and the work that went into creating 1381 England.

In addition to Garfield, the cast features Cosmo Jarvis as Wat Tyler, Jamie Bell as John Ball, Woody Norman as King Richard II, Katherine Waterston as Joan of Kent, Stephen Dillane as Simon Sudbury, Tom Hollander as Sir Robert Hale, Thomasin McKenzie as Alyce, Jonny Lee Miller as William Walworth, and Sky Yang as the Scribe.

The Uprising was written and directed by Paul Greengrass, whose previous films include The Bourne Supremacy, United 93, The Bourne Ultimatum, Green Zone, Captain Phillips, Jason Bourne, and The Lost Bus. He produced the new movie alongside Jason Blum, Gregory Goodman, Joanna Kaye, Joe Neurauter, Lars Sylvest, Deborah Acoca, Kwesi Dickson, Philipp Kreuzer, Cliff Lanning, Matt Murphie, Gary Raskin, Jay Taylor, and Chance Wright.
