After 58 Years, Marvel Reveals Mephisto’s True Form

Of all the most menacing supervillains in Marvel Comics lore, few are more notoriously hellish than Mephisto, the Lord of Evil. If a character comes across him for whatever reason, they must either be in dire straits or they’ve supremely erred, with Mephisto’s trickery luring many into character- and series-defining deals, such as when Peter Parker exchanged his marriage for Aunt May’s life and his identity to be a secret once again.

As an actual demon, Mephisto obviously represents a niche corner of Marvel lore that embraces the atmosphere of the occult and the supernatural. Marvel lore dictates that nothing is ever irreversible, nor is anything ever exempt from a spontaneous retcon or nerf, and the concept of Hell in the Earth-616 Marvel universe is still developing in every story that bravely chooses to tackle it. Recently, Steve Rogers’ Captain America and Victor Von Doom’s Doctor Doom have been battling alongside each other in Hell, and their confrontation with Mephisto has taught readers how petrifying the devil truly is.

Mephisto Is Literally Hell

After defeating Red Skull, Captain America and Doctor Doom march with an army of demons and freed souls to Mephisto’s doorstep, not realizing that they’ve been on it this whole time. Mephisto reiterates that not only is Hell his domain, but that he is Hell, and demonstrates that by taking the form (or revealing his true form) of a ‘sky’ full of enormous, ominous eyeballs with blood-red irises.

Fans know Mephisto as typically manifesting in a traditional, devilish humanoid form, wearing garb as crimson as his flesh and hair. In Captain America #16, Mephisto also takes a gargantuan draconic form, proving how out of their depth Captain America and Doctor Doom are.

Mephisto’s Hellish Power Knows No Bounds, Apparently

Captain America #15 did a lot to establish how omnipotent Marvel Comics’ Mephisto is, and its polarizing cliffhanger demands that Captain America #16 is incredibly thrilling. Both Steve and Doom sold their souls to Mephisto, but it’s possible that these deals will be undone or a mere ruse on Steve and Doom’s part, as Doom did mention that Mephisto’s biggest weakness was his “predictability” when they were strategizing how to best the devil.

Of course, because the last 19 years of Spider-Man’s Marvel Comics history have looked the way they have because of the deal Peter made with Mephisto, it’ll be a bit disappointing if Steve is able to so easily find a loophole or deceive Mephisto. For instance, it would’ve been neat if the fact that Steve isn’t a member of Earth’s Mightiest Survivors, the Avengers lineup that’s assembling in Avengers #1 this November, suggested that he remains in Hell.

However, thanks to solicitations for every core, tie-in, and epilogue issue that’s woven into Marvel Comics’ Avengers: Armageddon crossover event, including Captain America #17, it seems fair to assume that Mephisto will have no claim on Steve’s soul, nor will Mephisto be a problem that Steve must contend with beyond issue #16. Therefore, Mephisto may not be as nightmarish as he appears to be, but it’ll be neat to see if he takes any other fantastical forms. The solicitation for Captain America #16 reads as follows:

WHO WILL RULE HELL? As the battle for Hell’s throne reaches its dramatic climax, Steve Rogers realizes he may have chosen the wrong side. The effects of the war spill out into the living world, bringing the Marvel Universe to the edge of ARMAGEDDON!

Beginning with Steve Rogers, Captain America's birth resulted from a frail man taking part in an experimental U.S. Army super-soldier trial, which imbued him with super-human abilities.
