Randell dents Northants promotion hopes as Derbyshire eke out slender lead

Derbyshire's New Zealand seamer Brett Randell led the charge with three wickets for 48 as Northamptonshire were dismissed for 310, trailing by 62 runs, on an attritional second day of this Rothesay County Championship clash at Wantage Road.

Ricardo Vasconcelos made 58, passing 900 runs for the season in an opening partnership of 97 with Luke Procter (54), who was captaining Northamptonshire for the 50th time in Championship matches.

Saif Zaib scored a busy 46, but with Northamptonshire handily placed on 187 for two shortly before tea, Nick Potts (3 for 51) took wickets with consecutive deliveries, becoming the first injury substitute to take a wicket for Derbyshire.

The promotion-hunting hosts' hopes were further dented after tea when Randell took two wickets in one over on a surface offering movement and bounce for seamers and spinners alike. Luis Reece also took two scalps, including his 200th first-class wicket for Derbyshire, as the hosts slumped to 243 for eight.

But Lewis McManus and Ben Sanderson (27) staged a late recovery with a flurry of boundaries to clinch two precious batting bonus points. McManus was finally dismissed for 53, after passing 4,000 first-class runs.

Resuming on 15 without loss, Vasconcelos and Procter both found early runs through the covers off the seamers, while Procter also played a sumptuous straight drive.

Randell, though, proved difficult to score off. He found plenty of movement to beat the bat before Vasconcelos pulled imperiously when he dropped short.

Bowling in tandem with Martin Andersson and Reece, Shoaib Bashir extracted turn and bounce as scoring dried up from both ends, although when the England spinner dropped short, Vasconcelos pulled dismissively for four.

Vasconcelos passed 50 before driving Reece sweetly down the ground as Northamptonshire went into lunch on 96 without loss.

Aitchison made the key breakthrough immediately after the interval, jagging one back to trap Vasconcelos lbw. The Derbyshire all-rounder was later substituted following a suspected groin strain, Potts coming in as the official injury replacement.

Runs were in short supply for the first hour post-lunch as Abbas and Randell kept the batters honest, beating the bat and finding some sharp bounce. Randell also induced an edge from Procter which fell just short of the slips.

The Northants skipper finally clipped one off his legs off Abbas for a welcome boundary before going to his half-century with a fluent straight drive off Randell. He fell shortly afterwards, though, lbw to Reece from a full delivery.

Zaib looked to play positively from the start, dancing down the wicket to deposit Bashir over midwicket. He took a liking to Martin Andersson too, pulling him behind square and smashing another delivery through the covers.

Gus Miller played more conservatively but collected two boundaries off the seamers. He was dropped on 18 by Wayne Madsen at first slip off Abbas, but his reprieve was brief as he pulled a short wide one from Potts to midwicket.

Northamptonshire's afternoon ended in disarray as Potts struck with his next delivery, Zaib playing another rash shot when he pulled a short leg-side delivery to fine-leg.

James Sales saw off the hat-trick ball after tea before running three, while Calvin Harrison crunched Potts through cover.

But Randell struck with the second new ball, bowling full to trap Harrison lbw before moving one back five balls later to hit Sales' off stump."

McManus and George Bartlett garnered early boundaries, but as scoring dried up Northants lost two wickets in seven balls. First Bartlett nicked behind off Potts, then Liam Guthrie chipped to cover off Reece.

Sanderson and McManus entertained the crowd with a counterattack, Sanderson smiting Potts for six over deep midwicket before McManus pulled for six more. Randell removed Sanderson but McManus continued to blaze boundaries, swivelling to pull Randell out of the ground over deep-midwicket before falling to Andersson in the day's final over.
