Maersk, Hateco sign deal for $3.5B rail terminal network in northern Vietnam
A.P. Moller-Maersk, the world’s second-largest container carrier, has agreed to work with Vietnamese conglomerate Hateco on a $3.5 billion network of railway container terminals in northern Vietnam. The deal was signed during President To Lam’s official visit to Denmark.
On Tuesday in Copenhagen, Maersk’s port operating arm, APM Terminals, signed a memorandum of understanding with Hateco to draw up plans for a rail freight terminal, including cargo handling centers, in the port city of Haiphong, Hateco said in a statement.
The proposed network would also include three other rail freight facilities in northern provinces. Hateco said it is meant to link industrial parks, logistics hubs, and production zones with major transport hubs.
According to the statement, the facilities will use digital technology to improve cargo handling and storage, and will connect to seaports and rail infrastructure. They are expected to ease road congestion and widen options for cross-border shipments.
