Spider-Man: Brand New Day has become the highest-grossing movie of all time in the US

Spider-Man: Brand New Day's box office dominance continues, as it has set its most impressive record yet, as it has become the become the highest-grossing film at the US box office. Not just of the year, or of the decade, or even century so far. But of all time.

The fourth solo entry in the wall-crawler's Marvel Cinematic Universe movies that have been made Sony in collaboration with Disney has made over $936.8m at cinemas in North America (the US and Canada).

Star Wars: The Force Awakens previously held the title, at $936.7m, but now it has to settle for second place.

At the worldwide box office, Brand New Day has made about $2.45 billion, which makes it the all-time third biggest film.

It sits behind Avengers: Endgame with $2.8 billion and the original Avatar, with $2.92 billion.

Could it ever overtake one or both of these films? It seems quite unlikely, but maybe there's no stopping the webhead.

It's been reported that Tom Holland could make $100 million from the film, with a $20 million base salary plus backend bonuses based on the film's performance.

Responding to the film's success, Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Ravi Ahuja said: "We obviously hadn’t forecast that. We thought it would do incredibly well, but we didn’t know that would do that well."

He also explained that he expects that a fifth movie would be in "a couple years" time, were it to happen (it hasn't officially been announced yet), with the third animated Spider-Verse project as the next focus for the franchise.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is out now in cinemas. Homecoming and No Way Home are available to stream Sky/NOW, while No Way Home is also available on BBC iPlayer. Far From Home doesn't currently seem to be on any UK streaming subscription service.
