Celeb Stylist Jason Bolden Brings Polished ’90s Style to Quince

That effortless approach to getting dressed was at the heart of celebrity stylist Jason Bolden's Quince collaboration. Bolden, whose celebrity clients include Cynthia Erivo, Sabrina Carpenter, Michael B. Jordan, and Nicole Kidman, filled his Quince capsule with washable silk, rich corduroy, cashmere, leather and easy fall layers.
The collection is designed to bring new life to the understated and effortless staples that defined the decade. And according to Bolden, you didn't need to completely overhaul your wardrobe to get the look.
The stylist told E! that everything from pairing unexpected textures to showing restraint with accessories could make classic fall pieces feel fresh again.
Below, Bolden shared his tricks for channeling polished '90s style this fall and the Quince staples he'd use to do it.
Not every '90s trend needed a comeback. Instead, Bolden looked to the decade's simplest pieces, the ones that still felt just as relevant decades later.
"The slip dress, first and always. Then a great straight or wide-leg jean, a cashmere crewneck, and a minimal leather bag with real structure," Bolden told E!. "The styling trick worth bringing back is restraint. The '90s taught us that a few beautiful pieces worn with confidence beat a head-to-toe trend every time."
And instead of piling on accessories, Bolden recommended choosing just one that could change the entire look. "Edit your accessories down to one strong piece," he said. "With my clients, one bag, one shoe or one piece of jewelry can change the entire look. Most people add too much. A simple knit and trousers with a structured leather tote and a sharp loafer will always look more expensive than the same outfit covered in accessories."

When it comes to fall boots, he said you really only need two: "A sleek black boot with some structure, and a slouchy one you can live in."
Bolden paired the structured boot with a silk skirt and cropped leather jacket for what he described as "hard against soft."
The slouchy version, meanwhile, worked with jeans, cords or even a slip dress. His advice for making either feel less predictable? "Wear your boots with the piece you'd least expect."

Cable-knit sweaters can quickly veer traditional, but Bolden's approach was decidedly less buttoned-up. Instead of styling them with equally classic pieces, he used silk, oversized proportions and unexpected combinations to give the staple a cooler attitude.
"Take it out of its comfort zone. Ditch the khakis and collared shirts," he advised. "Instead, wear it over a silk slip or a silk skirt, or drape it across your shoulders on top of an oversized button-down." He also recommended sizing up "so it slouches instead of fitting neatly."

"Choose a straight leg over a flare, a simple top, and a good loafer or leather shoe," Bolden explained. "I would also go for rich colors like chocolate or camel. Keeping it simple and letting the texture shine, it will automatically feel modern."

Perhaps the most useful lesson to take from '90s minimalism was that you didn't need an endless stream of new clothes to make your wardrobe feel current. If you were adding just three pieces for fall, Bolden prioritized staples that could transform what you already owned.
"One, a beautiful cashmere crewneck in a color you love," he said. "It works in every season and with everything you already own." Next came a silk skirt or slip dress, which he said "instantly takes your denim and knits somewhere new."
Finally, he recommended a great Italian leather bag. "A bag grounds the whole outfit and can change the attitude of a look you've worn a hundred times," Bolden explained. "All of these pieces are true staples that can stay in your closet forever."
