Chinese biotech company METiS TechBio (MTBOY) has announced a partnership with Eli Lilly (LLY) to develop next-gen drug delivery technologies using artificial intelligence in a deal worth up to $1.1B.
As part of the collaboration, the companies will develop novel lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-based drug delivery solutions leveraging METiS’ AI-driven ionizable lipid discovery and optimization platform, AiLNP.
LNP technology, a key delivery mechanism used in messenger-RNA-based vaccines such as Moderna’s (MRNA) Spikevax, enables tissue-specific distribution of therapeutics effectively.
The partnership, which extends across multiple therapeutic areas, will combine Indiana-based Lilly’s (LLY) expertise in drug discovery, development, and commercialization with the AiLNP AI-powered platform, Chris Lai, CEO of METiS, said in a statement on Monday.
In exchange, the Hong Kong-listed company will receive an upfront payment valued at low double-digit millions of U.S. dollars in addition to development, regulatory, and commercial milestone payments worth up to $1.1B.
METiS is also entitled to single-digit tiered royalties based on annual net sales of products resulting from the deal.
