BioWare's demise will be showcased in a documentary that's been filming for two years, and it's coming quite soon

After BioWare was shutdown and Mass Effect 5 cancelled amidst EA’s layoffs, the outpouring of love and support from the Mass Effect community has been overwhelming.

The #SaveMassEffect petition, at the time of writing, now has more than 300k signatures, a potential composer for Mass Effect 5 released 20 minutes of music made for the game, and finally, a leaked trailer for the game was dropped.

And it seems heartbreak over BioWare is only continuing, with now a documentary that will showcase BioWare's demise.

The documentary is titled Massive Effect: The BioWare story and began filming two years ago. Now, instead of documenting the studio's ongoing success, it will now pivot to showcase BioWare's total collapse.

Only 50 people remained at BioWare before the studio was shutdown, as the developer had already seen layoffs throughout the years.

However, according to Deadline, this new documentary is being made for Canada's Super Channel, but we can hopefully expect further distribution.

"We are thrilled to bring Massive Effect: The BioWare Story to Canadian audiences," stated Kim Ball, EVP content & communications at Super Channel.

"As an Edmonton-based company, we're especially proud to celebrate BioWare’s extraordinary hometown story and the people, creativity and groundbreaking storytelling behind some of the most beloved games of a generation."

Confirmed BioWare figures that will be featured in the documentary are the three co-founders Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip.

The creative team behind BioWare's biggest games like Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Dragon Age series are also expected to make a cameo.

From the Mass Effect side, this includes Command Shepard actor Jennifer Hale, as well as Mass Effect lead writer Drew Karpyshyn, BioWare general manager Aaryn Flynn, and Mass Effect writer and developer Mac Walters.

The documentary is expected to premiere sometime in 2027 but does not currently have an exact release date.

However, a website for the documentary has been set up, inviting fans to: "…share a piece of their own BioWare history.

"Whether it's fan art, cosplay, photos or videos from conventions, personal memorabilia, or footage capturing your experiences with BioWare, we'd love to see it!"

And, with the Mass Effect TV show still in the works alongside this documentary, it's clear that Mass Effect as an IP will long outlive the games.
