‘The Diplomat’ Renewed For Season 5 At Netflix

After that explosive season four finale, The Diplomat will be back for a fifth season.
Netflix has renewed the Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell-led political thriller for Season 5, two weeks after its season four drop.
The fourth season, which heavily featured Allison Janney, who plays President Grace Penn, and Bradley Whitford, who plays her husband Todd, opened its first week with 4.8M views, in line with ratings for its third season.
[SPOILER ALERT] During the season, Russell’s Kate Wyler had to navigate her relationship with her husband, Sewell’s Vice President Hal Wyler, deal with President Penn and her husband and figure out how to manage the fallout of an assassination attempt of the U.S. President on British soil, while also still handling the issue of a felled Russian warship.
Speaking to Deadline ahead of the season, Russell and Sewell joked about heading “somewhere very exotic” for season five. “Trouble in Fiji,” laughed Sewell. “A tiki bar,” added Russell.
Season four ended with Wyler dramatically resigning from her post during the middle of a G7 meeting in Italy and is soon joined by her husband. “How f*cking cool,” said Russell. “How fantastic to blow everything up,” added Sewell.
There’s no sign that Season 5 of The Diplomat is the final season, either. Series creator Debora Cahn told Deadline that she has a plan where these characters inevitably end up, but she doesn’t know how long the plan is.
“I legitimately don’t know, and I don’t know if I’ll stick with that. I knew this season where I wanted to land. But if we find something better, I’m going for that or if we find that these characters have grown into something that isn’t what I anticipated. When I first pitched the series, I want it to be a living document. I want it to be a living organism,” she said.
Cahn exec produces alongside Russell, Janice Wiliams, Alex Graves, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie.
The drama also stars Ato Essandoh, who plays Stuart Hayford, Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy, and Ali Ahn, who plays Eidra Park, CIA London Station Chief, who were also dealing with their new relationship in season four. Nana Mensah also stars as White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah.
There was also a new face of British politics: Jodie Whittaker joined the cast as British Prime Minister Bethan Vaughn, replacing Rory Kinnear’s Nicol Trowbridge. David Gyasi, who played British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, was killed off in season four.
