Tinubu, NGE mourn Eagle Online publisher Oladipo

President Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers have mourned the death of journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, describing his passing as a painful loss to Nigeria’s media industry.

Oladipo, a former Politics Editor of The PUNCH Newspapers, died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56.

Oladipo was the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, the parent company of The Eagle Online.

The President’s condolence was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Tinubu acknowledged Oladipo’s contributions to political journalism and digital media, particularly his years of reporting and efforts to provide Nigerians with credible information through traditional and online platforms.

The President said the late journalist’s career reveals the role of the media in strengthening democracy by keeping citizens informed, holding public officials accountable and providing avenues for public discourse.

“Dotun Oladipo’s death at the age of 56 is a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and to our nation. He was a committed journalist who devoted significant years of his life to informing the public and contributing to the development of our democracy,” Tinubu said.

He also recalled Oladipo’s contribution to the growth of digital journalism through The Eagle Online, which he founded after his career at The PUNCH Newspapers.

Tinubu extended his condolences to Oladipo’s family, colleagues and friends, particularly members of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, where the deceased served as president from 2017 to 2021.

“His contributions to political journalism and the digital media space will not be forgotten. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues in GOCOP and friends. I pray that Almighty God will grant him eternal rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” the President said.

Reacting, the NGE, in a statement by its President, Eze Anaba and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, said it received with profound sadness the news of the passing of Oladipo.

The statement read, “In a career spanning several decades, Dr Oladipo distinguished himself through professionalism, courage, intellectual depth and an unwavering commitment to the principles of journalism and nation building. His contributions to journalism and the media industry left an indelible mark.

“As a former publisher of an online publication, he was deeply committed to the growth and development of the Nigerian media and the digital landscape.

“He was a committed member of the NGE, whose contributions added impetus to the growth of the elite media professional body.

“His membership of NGE reflected his strong belief in professional solidarity and the importance of promoting ethical, credible and responsible journalism.

“Dr Oladipo was not merely a media practitioner but also a respected colleague, mentor and contributor to the continuing evolution of the Nigerian media landscape.

“His death is a great loss to his family, colleagues, the journalism profession and the wider media community. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, professional excellence, courage and service that will continue to inspire those who knew and worked with him.”

The NGE extended condolences to his immediate family, colleagues, friends and associates.

“At this difficult moment, our thoughts and prayers are with his family. We pray that God will grant the family the strength and fortitude to bear this painful loss as well as grant the departed journalist eternal rest,” the statement read.

GOCOP also expressed sadness over the death of its former president.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Kemi Yesufu, on Wednesday, GOCOP said Oladipo was among the publishers who helped shape the organisation in its early years.

The statement said, “Oladipo came into online publishing with years of experience in the traditional media. He had worked as a journalist and editor before moving into digital publishing and bringing that experience to The Eagle Online.

“At a time when online news publishing was still developing in Nigeria, he was among those who saw the need for publishers to come together, share ideas and build a stronger professional community.

“As President between 2017 and 2021, Oladipo devoted considerable time to the affairs of the Guild. He represented GOCOP at different engagements and worked with members as the organisation dealt with the opportunities and challenges that came with the rapid growth of online publishing.”

The President of GOCOP, Danlami Nmodu, described Oladipo’s death as painful for the guild.

“Dotun played an important role in the development of GOCOP. He led the Guild for four years at a time when there was still a lot of work to be done to establish online publishers as an important part of the media. His contribution will always be remembered,” Nmodu said.

He added that Oladipo brought his experience as a journalist and publisher to the leadership of the guild.

“Dotun understood journalism, and he understood the business of publishing. He was passionate about the place of online media in Nigeria, and he gave his time to the growth of the Guild. We are saddened by his passing,” Nmodu said.

Oladipo’s death was announced on The Eagle Online website early Wednesday.

The publication described his death as a “shock,” noting that he was in his “usual state of health earlier in the day before suddenly taking ill at his office.”

According to TheCable, Oladipo drove himself to an unnamed hospital hours before his death.

His death was also confirmed by Nmodu, who announced it on the Guild’s WhatsApp platform on Tuesday.

“It has just been confirmed that Emeritus President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, died today.

“May his soul rest in peace. Amen,” the message read.

The General Secretary of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society, Nkanu Egbe, also announced Oladipo’s death on Wednesday.

“It is with profound sorrow that I announce the sudden death of our President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, who passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos, at the age of 56.

“Mr Oladipo led our cooperative with dedication, alongside a distinguished journalism career spanning nearly three decades. His passing is a devastating loss not only to IMPCMS but to Nigerian journalism as a whole,” Egbe said.

He added that funeral arrangements and other matters would be communicated later.

“The Executive Committee will communicate further details regarding funeral arrangements, condolence visits and interim leadership matters as they become available.

“Members are urged to keep his family and our cooperative in their prayers during this difficult time,” he stated.

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, in a Facebook post on Wednesday, described Oladipo as a “complete gentleman, accomplished digital journalist and remarkable human being.”

He wrote, “Dotun Oladipo has passed away. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire community of digital journalists in Nigeria.

“May Dotun Oladipo rest in power!” Oladipo served as Politics Editor at The PUNCH Newspapers and was also a member of the newspaper’s Editorial Board. After leaving The PUNCH, he worked with Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun before founding The Eagle Online.

He obtained a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in 1992.

Ogun poly alumni mourn
The Association of Mass Communication Graduates, AMACOG ’92 Set, Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, has mourned the death of Oladipo, describing the late journalist as a “mobiliser par excellence” and a committed member of the association.
A condolence statement signed by the President of the AMACOG ’92 Set, Adekunle Adeshina, on Wednesday, said his death had left members deeply grieved, particularly because of his contributions to both the professional community and the alumni group.
“It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that members of the AMACOG ’92 Set received the news of the sudden death of a dear distinguished member and friend, Mr Dotun Oladipo, who was the Welfare Executive of the association.
“It is an understatement to say that we are deeply grieved to learn of the passing of Oladipo, a highly valued exco member of the association on Tuesday,” the statement said.
The association said his significance to the group extended beyond his professional work, describing him as someone whose personality and commitment had helped strengthen relationships among members.
“Beyond his professional dedication and the immense contributions he made to journalism through his online news platform, [he] also brought a unique warmth, kindness, and energy to the set in numerous ways too many to number,” the statement said.
The group particularly highlighted his role in mobilising members and advancing its activities, describing the late publisher as “a mobiliser par excellence, a motivator, a goal getter, and highly passionate.”
According to the statement, Oladipo’s commitment to the association would be difficult to replace, with members mourning not only a colleague but also a course mate, friend and brother.
“Oladipo’s commitment and dedication to our group will be greatly missed by everyone who had the opportunity of knowing him and working with him,” the association said.
The AMACOG ’92 Set extended its condolences to Oladipo’s family, particularly his widow, Taiwo, popularly known as Ayaba, as well as his mother, children and other members of the family.
“During this difficult time of sorrow, our thoughts and prayers are with the family of our dear friend, especially his lovely widow, Mrs Taiwo Oladipo, popularly known as Ayaba.
“The AMACOG 92 Set shares in the grief of the mother, wife, children and the entire Oladipo family and extends our heartfelt condolences to the family at this critical time,” the statement said.
The association said it hoped the family would draw strength from the memories of the deceased while praying for his eternal repose.
“At this time, we pray that the family finds divine comfort and strength and in the cherished memories they had shared with our departed friend,” it said.
The association added, “We sincerely believe that our departed course mate, friend and brother has gone to be with the saints and we pray for the repose of his soul.”
It also prayed that “the Almighty God will comfort and strengthen his family and all members of the AMACOG ’92 family.”
