Supernatural’s New Villain Is The Scariest Addition To The Franchise

Six years after the original show ended, Supernatural introduces the most terrifying and potentially one of the strongest creatures Sam and Dean Winchester have fought. Throughout Supernatural's fifteen seasons, Sam and Dean Winchester faced all kinds of paranormal entities, from folklore monsters to ancient mythological creatures, later fought the Archangels Michael and Lucifer, and ultimately God Himself. After defeating the creator of the universe and helping Jack ascend as the new supreme deity, the Winchesters arrived at the final boundary of Supernatural antagonists. With no remaining adversaries of greater strength left to challenge them, Supernatural reached an organic and logical conclusion.
Across their fifteen-year live-action run, the Winchester brothers faced a wide array of genuinely terrifying enemies. Sam and Dean regularly battled flesh-eating ghouls, bloodthirsty vampires, and parasitic Changelings that stole the identities of neighborhood children to feed on their unsuspecting mothers. They also survived encounters with Leviathans, the indestructible beasts from Purgatory who could mimic humans, and they fought malicious Djinn who trapped victims in hallucinated realities while draining their blood. Yet, ancient pagan gods like the winter-deity Hold Nickar, reality-warping Hellhounds, and manipulative demons like Azazel and Lilith always blended into the rather grounded world of Supernatural.
In between the events of the show, Sam and Dean Winchester fought multiple paranormal villains who overshadow many of the original series' main threats with their sheer power and imposing size.
Cernunnos Is The Scariest Villain The Winchesters Have Faced
Supernatural: Dean Winchester #1; Written By Chuck Brown; Art By Rapha Lobosco, Elton Thomasi, And Pedro Estouco
While Sam is busy traveling deep into the Appalachian Mountains in his parallel solo series, the mythical creature Cernunnos threatens an injured Dean in Dynamite Entertainment's Supernatural: Dean Winchester #1. Towering over his victims with a crown of massive jagged stag antlers, the Celtic horned god Cernunnos makes his Supernatural debut as a grotesque anthropomorphic beast that stalks innocent people in the woods. Cernunnos is unlike anything Sam and Dean fought in their live-action series: a huge creature seemingly made of pure shadow, with demon-like horns, glowing red eyes, a large fang-filled smile, and multiple gold pendants hanging from his head.
In real-world mythology, Cernunnos is the conventional name given to a prominent Celtic god of fertility, life, animals, wealth, and the underworld. Cernunnos often appears alongside stags, horned serpents, and other wild creatures, and he's depicted sitting cross-legged and wearing or holding a sacred torc. He's associated with the natural cycles of growth, decay, and rebirth, and though the Ancient Celts left behind very few written records, modern folklore often honors him as the master of the wild hunt, equivalent to the Greek god Pan. Like many mythological beings, Cernunnos isn't explicitly evil or good, but he holds a lot of potential for horror reinventions.
Sam And Dean's New Supernatural Threats Are On A Different Level
Few Of Sam And Dean's New Foes Could Have Appeared In The Original Show
Dynamite's ten-issue Supernatural series and its two spinoffs pit the Winchester brothers against much stronger and scarier enemies than the ones they're used to in their live-action show. They even fight a group of giant killer robots who end up helping the brothers fend off an army of zombies. Although antagonists like Steff Windler and the Lichtträger maintain the original show's scale, Sam and Dean face horrors like Cernunnos and a Mothman, creatures that Supernatural's television special effects department would have never done true justice.
The Supernatural comics also have the chance to bring back creatures the original show didn't exploit to the fullest. Supernatural creatures like the Banshee and the Wendigo only made fleeting appearances due to the costs of complex prosthetic work and computer-generated visual effects. These two mythical creatures alone are worth an entire season, and ten to twenty years later, they finally have the opportunity to show their full potential in the Supernatural universe exactly as they were meant to be seen.
