Solok-Padang highway closed after flash flood inundates region

Solok, West Sumatra (ANTARA) - The Solok-Padang highway in the Arosuka area of Solok Regency, West Sumatra, remains impassable after flash flood debris buried sections of the road on Monday night.

Solok Police Traffic Unit Chief First Inspector Akbar Kharisma Tanjung advised motorists traveling between Solok and Padang to use an alternative route via Padang Panjang while clearing operations are underway.

"Due to the flash flood debris covering the Solok-Padang road, it cannot be traversed at this moment," Tanjung said Tuesday, urging drivers not to attempt crossing the affected section.

The Solok Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that the flash flood struck the Arosuka Government Office Complex on Monday at approximately 8:00 p.m. local time.

Solok District Head Jon Firman Pandu noted that the flood inundated several government buildings, including the Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR), the Health Agency, the Regional Finance Agency (BKD), and the local legislative body (DPRD) complex, alongside nearby residential homes.

A joint team of BPBD officers, military personnel, police, firefighters, and local volunteers deployed to carry out evacuations and clear the mud and debris.

Authorities urged residents to remain cautious and stay clear of swollen riverbanks while disaster response operations continue.
