Part of the legacy of Firefly is a variety of great quotes, and River Tam (Summer Glau) delivered a line so good that it’s still a Top 5 sci-fi quote. The sci-fi genre is especially popular on TV, as it has brought some of the most notable and interesting universes to life, such as those from Star Trek, The Expanse, and Westworld. Various sci-fi shows can be found among the best TV shows of all time, some of them greatly influential in the genre, shaping it into what it is now.

Among the best sci-fi TV shows of all time is Firefly, created by Joss Whedon, which, unfortunately, is also part of the list of best shows that were canceled unfairly soon. Firefly aired on Fox in 2002 for only 11 episodes of 14, as it was canceled before season 1 was over. However, not even its premature end could stop Firefly from succeeding thanks to its quality, concept, and characters, and it continued its run in other media.

Firefly introduced the audience to some memorable sci-fi characters, most notably Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), captain of the Serenity, who delivered some of the show's best quotes. However, another notable character is River Tam, thanks to whom the events of the show begin, and who has one of the most complex journeys in the show and extended media. River can be hard to understand at times, but she has one of Firefly’s best lines that, to this day, is one of the best sci-fi TV quotes.

River’s “Cows” Quote On Firefly Is A Lot Deeper Than It Seems

Firefly takes the audience into the far future, where humanity has colonized other star systems. The central planets formed the Alliance, a powerful central government that, unsurprisingly, made way for disagreements from other planets. This prompted a civil war, with the Alliance being the winning side. Firefly, then, follows Captain Mal Reynolds, who fought on the losing side of the war alongside his first mate, Zoe Washburne (Gina Torres). Mal, Zoe, and the rest of the Serenity crew now travel across space taking odd jobs, smuggling cargo, and more to survive while running away from the Alliance.

The events of Firefly begin when Mal and his crew take on new passengers: Shepherd Book (Ron Glass) and Simon Tam (Sean Maher), the latter a trauma surgeon. To everyone’s surprise, Simon smuggles his sister, River, onto the ship, causing major trouble for everyone as Simon rescued River from the Alliance. River was heavily experimented on by the Alliance, leaving her severely traumatized, delusional, and having a very difficult time adapting to a “normal” life.

This is also why River often speaks cryptically, making it hard for the characters to understand her sometimes – but everyone understood her best line. In the episode “Safe”, the crew arrives on a border planet to sell cattle, with River fascinated by them, prompting her to say:

“They weren't cows inside. They were waiting to be, but they forgot. Now they see sky and remember what they are.”

The line isn't just about cows and how they acted once they were back in their right environment and free, but also about River herself. River was stripped of her identity, sanity, stability, and more by the Alliance, and it wasn’t until she was out of there that she slowly remembered who she was. It takes a lot of time and effort for River to recover, but being around her brother, the Serenity crew, and far from the Alliance were key to her process.

River Is Firefly’s Most Tragic Character

Every crew member of the Serenity had their own emotional baggage and struggles, but River had the most tragic backstory and most difficult journey throughout the show. Before the Alliance experimented on her and tortured her, River was a brilliant kid, and she and Simon came from a wealthy family. River’s intellect led to her enrollment in The Academy, a government learning facility posing as a private school for gifted children, but in reality, it was a government experiment through which they intended to create assassins.

For that, she was experimented on, had surgery that damaged her brain, and more, and it wasn’t until she sent a coded message to Simon that she was finally rescued. River struggles with her mental stability throughout Firefly due to severe PTSD and more, which led her to not speak for prolonged periods, display erratic behavior, and even have sudden violent reflexes. In Serenity, her dormant programming is triggered, turning her into a ruthless assassin.

River’s “cows” quote is a lot more significant and much deeper once you know or remember her story, all the challenges she had to overcome, and all the pain she endured. River eventually received an optimistic ending, but the road to that was very tough.
