Dolphins have been pictured leaping off the coast of Sunderland.

The calves were snapped playfully swimming in the waters near Tyne and Wear on Monday.

There were also adults in the mix as the group of around eight swam around near Roker.

Anthony Skordis, who lives nearby, said: 'I heard some dolphins had been at Roker in the morning so thought I would chance a walk up the pier later.

'I was lucky that a group of about eight dolphins were still there. They were in a really playful mood.'

Mr Skordis was walking with his dog Dexter when the pair caught sight of the dolphins.

Dolphins - usually bottlenoses - are regularly spotted in the area, most frequently in the summer months.

Pods range from ten to 40 dolphins and sightings can often be made at Tynemouth's Longsands beach, King Edward's bay, the Tyne Estuary and Roker Pier.
