Charlie Hunnam's R-Rated Netflix Action Sequel Plans Get New Status Update From Star

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix hasn't closed the book on Triple Frontier 2 yet.
Co-written and directed by Oscar nominee J.C. Chandor, the 2019 thriller revolved around a group of former U.S. Army Delta Force operatives who, recruited by an old teammate, venture to Colombia to find an elusive drug lord, as well as steal what they believe to be $75 million in cash, only for complications to swiftly arise. Chandor assembled a star-studded roster for Triple Frontier's cast, which included Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Pedro Pascal and Adria Arjona.
Though garnering generally positive reviews from critics and a solid viewership in its first few months of release, the R-rated thriller was expected to be a one-off title amid Netflix's push into original film territory. However, things took a shift when Hunnam revealed in late 2023 that he had signed on as a main producer for Triple Frontier 2, even while cautioning that the sequel was still in the very early stages of development at the time.
Now, in an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns for his work in Tulsa King season 4, Hedlund has offered a status update on Triple Frontier 2. The star confirmed that, while he has "no [definitive] answers as of today," the action sequel is "still floating around" among the respective parties, with one of the big hurdles being the cast's busy schedule. However, he did also reveal that the prior development did come with one big step forward:
Garrett Hedlund: Charlie's been off being busy shooting nonstop. We sort of all have. They took a stab at the script, and I think when they sit down and take another one, there might be some momentum on it...but I feel like the theme is never say never. So, it would certainly be fun to get the band back together on that one.
Interestingly, Triple Frontier's performance saw conflicting reports at the time of the movie's release, with some indicating that the movie's $115 million production budget had actually left Netflix feeling underwhelmed by its debut and would be pulling back on spending for their original films. Netflix's Ted Sarandos, then CCO for the streamer, quickly dispelled these rumors and celebrated its 63 million views in the first few months of its release as a showing of its success.
This has certainly proven true in the seven years since Triple Frontier came out. The streamer particularly began ramping things up in 2021 with their acquisition of the Fear Street trilogy after being shelved amid Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the launch of Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead universe, and the Gal Gadot, Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds-led Red Notice.
More notably, Netflix has really stayed in business with Hunnam and Affleck after Triple Frontier. The English star netted his first Emmy nomination for his work on the Ryan Murphy-produced Monster: The Ed Gein Story, while also recently returning for its Lizzie Borden-focused fourth season and the first part of Snyder's Rebel Moon franchise. Affleck and Matt Damon, meanwhile, signed a first-look deal with Netflix for their Artists Equity banner, which has thus far turned into both the hit action-thriller The Rip and recently released thriller Animals.
Much to Hedlund's point, the entirety of Triple Frontier's cast continues to have very full dockets. Given Affleck's character died in the first film, his return would either be in a producing or directorial capacity, while Hunnam is currently mounting his meta-fueled Sons of Anarchy spinoff, Hedlund has stayed busy in the world of the Taylor Sheridan-created Tulsa King, Pascal is now both in the worlds of Star Wars and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Isaac has remained busy at Netflix with Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein and Beef season 2, among others.
Even still, the fact that Hedlund confirms that a draft of Triple Frontier 2's script has been completed is a promising sign of the efforts made by Netflix behind the scenes to get the sequel off the ground. With the first film leaving a few potential narrative threads for a follow-up to explore, namely the location of the rest of the money left behind in the ending, Hunnam, Hedlund, Pascal and Isaac may yet come back together for another action-packed heist.
