Netflix's Twilight series has received a shocking new production update.
Based on the best-selling book series by Stephenie Meyer, the Twilight film franchise began in 2008, following the human Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), two star-crossed lovers in Forks, Washington. Despite garnering generally negative reviews from critics, the five Twilight movies were a massive commercial success that grossed more than $3.3 billion at the box office worldwide.
Now, during its latest quarterly earnings call, Lionsgate said that Netflix's adult animated Midnight Sun series has been ordered for two seasons. The studio also ensured that Twilight author Stephenie Meyer is deeply involved in the process and signaled strong confidence and a significant commitment to expanding her universe. Read their full comments below:
2-season, adult animated series order at Netflix. Stephanie and her team are very hands on, really running the process, along with us and Netflix. We have high expectations and hopes. And, more importantly, that we’re engaging our audience and her audience in continuation and expansion of her universe.
Midnight Sun is Stephenie Meyer's 2020 companion novel, which retells the events of Twilight from the perspective of Edward Cullen instead of Bella Swan. Netflix adult animated series was first announced in September 2024, and the last update came two years later in July 2026, when a casting call started the search for voice actors. While a production start date has not yet been announced, progress is being made behind the scenes.
Stephenie Meyer continues to be involved in the project as an executive producer, while Sinead Daly serves as showrunner. The animated series also brings back several producers from the original Twilight movies, including Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Erik Feig, Meghan Hibbett, and Emily Wissink.
Based on the current production timeline, Netflix's Midnight Sun series likely won't be hitting screens until late 2027 at the earliest, or more likely, 2028 or beyond.
