Scarlett Johansson Breaks Silence on ‘The Batman Part II’ Role: “It Was Very Hard to Figure Out”

Scarlett Johansson is opening up about her mysterious role in The Batman Part II, revealing that the part gave her “a lot of existential angst.”

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, published Wednesday, the actress was asked about her upcoming projects, The Exorcist: Martyrs and The Batman Part II, and which role pushed her furthest out of her comfort zone.

“Probably the role in The Batman,” she responded. “It gave me a lot of existential angst for some reason.”

Johansson went on to explain that the role was particularly difficult to figure out, though she wasn’t sure exactly why.

“It was very hard to figure out. I don’t know why, whether it was just the role or was just where I’m in my life, or what’s going on, but it was just hard to crack it. And that’s all I can say about it. It was a tough role in a lot of ways,” she added.

Director Matt Reeves confirmed in May that Johansson would be joining the sequel to his 2022 film, which stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne/Batman. However, details about the character she will portray have yet to be revealed.

In addition to Johansson, new additions to the sequel’s cast include Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance as well as Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch. (See the full cast here.)

Production on The Batman Part II briefly paused in October after Reeves stepped away to attend to a family matter, according to DC Studios. Later that month, Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, Traffic) stepped in, with the studio’s support, to help Reeves complete the final stretch of principal photography.

The Batman Part II is currently scheduled to hit theaters Feb. 18, 2028.
