Five yellow cards would normally leave Lionel Messi facing a one-match suspension in any other league, but the Inter Miami captain will be available for Sunday's meeting with New England Revolution.
His reprieve comes through one of Major League Soccer's less familiar regulations, which allows players to have cautions removed from their disciplinary record after a sustained run of good behaviour.
What is the MLS Good Behaviour Incentive?
Messi picked up his fifth yellow card of the 2026 MLS season during Inter Miami’s 2-2 draw with FC Cincinnati on Wednesday, October 28. The booking came in the 44th minute, after the Argentine approached referee Armando Villarreal following a collision involving Cincinnati defender Samuel Gidi.
Under MLS’s regular-season disciplinary rules, five yellow cards ordinarily bring a $250 fine and an automatic one-match suspension, which would have ruled Messi out of Sunday's meeting with New England Revolution. However, the league's Good Behaviour Incentive allows a player to remove one caution from his accumulated total for every five consecutive appearances without receiving a yellow card, red card or supplemental disciplinary sanction.
Messi has completed two such qualifying runs this season, reducing his active tally from five bookings to three and keeping him available for Inter Miami's next match.

The provision appears in the league's official Competition Guidelines:“A player will automatically reduce his yellow card accumulation total by one yellow card each time he appears in five consecutive matches without receiving a yellow card, red card or supplemental discipline in such matches.“For clarity, a player cannot have a negative yellow card accumulation total; the Good Behavior Incentive can only reset to a zero-card total. This incentive will be automatically applied a maximum of three times throughout the course of the MLS Regular Season.”The reduction takes effect once the fifth qualifying match has been completed. A player can benefit from it a maximum of three times during the regular season, although the accumulation cannot fall below zero.
How Messi's five yellow cards became three
Messi's disciplinary record during the 2026 MLS regular season shows how the incentive has kept him below the suspension threshold. He has received five bookings, but two separate runs of five consecutive matches without disciplinary action reduced his accumulated total by one caution each time. His bookings and the subsequent reductions unfolded as follows:
- April 12, 2026 – Colorado Rapids (Matchday 8): Messi received his first yellow card of the season.
- May 3, 2026 – Orlando City (Matchday 11): He was booked again, taking his accumulation to two.
- After Orlando City: Messi completed five consecutive matches without a yellow card, red card or supplemental discipline. The first Good Behaviour reduction removed one caution, bringing his total down to one.
- June 21, 2026 – Nashville SC (Matchday 20): Messi received another booking, taking his accumulation to two.
- After Nashville: He then completed 10 consecutive matches without another booking or disciplinary sanction. That run triggered the incentive twice, removing two cautions from his accumulation and bringing the total back down to zero.
- September 13, 2026 – Atlanta United (Matchday 31): Messi was booked again, taking his active accumulation to one.
- October 29, 2026 – FC Cincinnati (Matchday 33): He received his fifth yellow card of the season, this time in the 44th minute for dissent after a collision involving Cincinnati defender Samuel Gidi. His active accumulation rose to three.
The two reductions explain why Messi's latest booking did not take him to the five-card suspension threshold.
Although he has been cautioned five times during the campaign, his official accumulation stands at three.
Why Messi's availability matters for Inter Miami
Messi's reprieve comes ahead of Inter Miami's meeting with New England Revolution on Sunday, with the two sides separated by just two points. The result could have a significant bearing on the Eastern Conference standings, as a victory for Kily Gonzalez's side would take Inter Miami above its opponents and into second place with one game remaining. The clubs last met on April 26, 2026, when they played out a 1-1 draw at Inter Miami's home ground. Carles Gil and Germán Berterame scored in that encounter, leaving Sunday's fixture with an opportunity for either side to gain an advantage in the closing stages of the regular season.

A higher finish would also bring better seeding for the MLS Cup, a competition Messi will be hoping to lead Inter Miami to win for the second time.
The Argentine has been central to the club's campaign, scoring 25 goals in 29 appearances and leading the league's scoring charts as he pursues the Golden Boot.Had the Good Behaviour Incentive not reduced his accumulation, Messi's fifth booking against Cincinnati would have left him facing a suspension. Instead, he is available for a fixture that could determine where Inter Miami finishes in the Eastern Conference.
