Indonesia outlines four steps to strengthen digital sovereignty

..human resource development must keep pace with infrastructure expansion, which requires substantial capital investment.
Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - Deputy Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Nezar Patria outlined four follow-up measures to strengthen Indonesia’s digital sovereignty.
“In the next 30 days, I hope the ministry together with industry associations will embrace the results of the quality, infrastructure, and technology documents that we can follow up on,” Patria said at Bali Tech Week (BTW) 2026 on Thursday.
The first measure involves defining the quality standards and requirements for digital infrastructure and technology to strengthen the country’s digital ecosystem in the future. The outcomes of these discussions are expected to be compiled into a document that stakeholders can use as a basis for further action.
The second measure is to launch pilot initiatives involving the government and industry to develop digital infrastructure, with participation from economic councils, corporations, and industry players.
Third, Patria emphasized the importance of developing talent and fostering innovation as part of the digital transformation process. He said human resource development must keep pace with infrastructure expansion, which requires substantial capital investment.
He also highlighted the need to strengthen innovation capabilities to make the digital ecosystem more adaptable to technological developments and better able to optimize existing infrastructure.
The fourth measure concerns policy and investment. Patria said existing regulations need to be reviewed and updated to keep pace with technological advancements.
He cited the growing capabilities of businesses using Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites as one development that could help overcome telecommunications network limitations in certain areas.
According to Patria, LEO technology is also advancing, requiring regulations to evolve accordingly. He noted that some aspects of the technology ecosystem are not yet covered by existing regulations.
Patria said an evaluation was needed to identify what was already underway, what remained unaddressed, and which initiatives needed to be accelerated.
He added that Bali Tech Week 2026 brought together stakeholders across the digital ecosystem, from various infrastructure providers to end users. The event is expected to help support economic growth and the creative sector by promoting meaningful connectivity.
