Marvel's Wolverine Officially Updates Its Most Controversial Feature

Ben Brosofsky has been writing for Screen Rant since 2022 and editing since 2024. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's in Cinema & Media Arts. Writing serves as a much-needed distraction from tackling a backlog of Steam games that will never be surmounted.

Marvel's Wolverine has been dividing audiences since the day that it first showed a detailed look at gameplay, largely due to the way that the game approaches guiding players through Logan's adventure. From quick-time events that are impossible to fail on default settings to a highway chase where steering is an afterthought, the evident imperative to keep players moving forward at all times has left some feeling like they aren't playing a game at all.
The most infamous feature has been Marvel's Wolverine's use of scent trails and other visual indicators to guide players, making the location of collectibles obvious and sometimes pointing the way forward even in extremely linear scenarios. Now, an official update to the game has tweaked this feature, although it still isn't answering every complaint.
As described on developer Insomniac's official support website, the v.01.001.005 update "adjusts the presentation of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators." While there isn't yet a way to turn them off entirely, Insomniac also suggests that an actual toggle is a possibility for the future.
"Additionally, this hotfix adjusts the presentation of the Scent Trails and Audio Sense indicators, including reduced opacity to make these visuals less intense. Our team continues to evaluate ways to further improve Senses in the game, including exploring toggleable options for a future update."
Aside from this much-requested alteration, the hotfix also targets crashes "experienced by a small percentage of players since launch." This is the second update for Marvel's Wolverine, with the first arriving before launch and targeting several key bugs involving voice over language and character behavior.
As someone who isn't exactly enthused by Marvel's Wolverine's approach to player guidance, to put it mildly, it's good to see that Insomniac has made the issue a priority. Adjusted presentation is a bandage for a larger issue, so hopefully the toggle options that Insomniac is "exploring" will manifest in the near future.
It's unlikely that any patches will fully address player complaints, as the frictionless game design goes quite a bit deeper than surface-level elements like the Sense indicators and QTEs. In a broader sense, though, the streamlined nature of Marvel's Wolverine isn't exactly a surprise. It might be at its worst here, but it feels like a natural continuation of a design philosophy that has been guiding a variety of PlayStation exclusives, from Marvel's Spider-Man to the God of War reboot, for years.
For those who have never been bothered by this approach, it doesn't sound like Insomniac plans to get rid of it entirely, so the unsubtle presentation of Sense guidance will likely remain either the default setting or at least an option. Hopefully, patches will result in a win-win situation for players. For now, Marvel's Wolverine has at least made a start.
