Sammy Hagar Wants To “Bury the Hatchet” with Alex Van Halen

Sammy Hagar would like to bury the hatchet with Alex Van Halen in the midst of a contentious relationship between the former Van Halen bandmates.
Alex hasn’t had kind words for Sammy over the past few years, most recently calling the singer a “complete idiot.” The drummer appears to be upset about a section of Hagar’s 2011 memoir where he wrote about the “dark side” of Eddie Van Halen’s life, something Hagar expressed regret in following Eddie’s passing in 2020.
In a new interview with Billboard, Hagar said that despite Alex’s harsh words about him, he would like to reconcile with the drummer.
“I’ll put out an olive branch right now, and say it again a million times — I would love to bury the hatchet with Alex,” said Hagar. “I would love to be friends again. If we played music, mo’ better. That would be awesome…. But I’m willing to forget anything and everything and be friends and bring the two (Van Halen) eras together like they should be.”
He continued, “It’s the crack in the world I wrote about 50 years ago. He’s sticking with it, and why? I’m trying to get rid of that. Unification over separation. Let’s unify this world. That’s my dream and wish; if I could find a way to do that, there you go. That might be my future.”
This mirrors other current sentiments from Sammy Hagar in which he called for peace and expressed confusion and dismay over both the rift and what he views as the continued disparagement of his years fronting Van Halen.
Elsewhere in the interview, Hagar said of his Van Halen years, “I’m never done with Van Halen. I’ll always play five or six Van Halen songs. Van Halen was the pinnacle of my long fuckin’ five-decade career.”
