2027 Budget: Recipients rely on STR, Sara to manage household spending

KUALA LUMPUR: The RM16 billion allocation for Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) under the 2027 Budget is a vital lifeline for recipients managing monthly household expenses.

When tabling the Budget on Oct 9, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the increased allocation enables nine million STR recipients to receive Sara assistance of up to RM150 a month, or RM1,800 annually.

Recipient Nor Azura Ismail, 42, said the increase will ease the burden on low-income households managing basic family needs, particularly essential items such as rice, cooking oil, and eggs.

"This assistance reduces my monthly expenses significantly. While it does not cover everything, it eases the financial burden and helps me manage my family's needs better," she said.

"I hope this support continues and is enhanced to ensure those in need receive ongoing assistance in coping with the cost of living."

Nor Azura also lauded the government's decision to expand Sara usage for fresh produce at 216 Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama) farmers' markets and tamu nationwide, giving recipients broader shopping options.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old Menara Merdeka 118 employee Muhammad Azham Zailani said the higher allocation helps young workers starting their careers manage daily living expenses.

Muhammad Azham, who began receiving Sara last year to buy groceries and toiletries, said he previously had to delay less necessary purchases to stay within budget.

"If the assistance increases, I can buy non-perishable items in bulk, reducing recurring monthly spending," he said, hoping more retail outlets will accept Sara payments to improve accessibility.

Civil servant Mashitah Zakiah Abdul Rahman, 30, said Sara assistance has helped cover her daily necessities since moving into rented accommodation away from her family.

"My budget was tight before receiving this assistance, requiring strict planning before buying necessities. I hope Sara support is increased periodically to keep pace with living costs," she said.

Eligible recipients receive STR in cash, while Sara funds are credited to their MyKad to purchase essentials at participating retail outlets and supermarkets.
