Johnny Flynn teases ‘new enemy for the Harrigans’ in MobLand series two

Actor Johnny Flynn said it was “quite daunting” to join MobLand for its second series, and that his character is “the new enemy for the Harrigans”.

Flynn, 43, known for roles in Goodbye June and Emma, is a new addition to the hit Paramount+ crime series, which stars Pierce Brosnan and Dame Helen Mirren as the leaders of a mobster family that runs north London.

Little is known about his new character, but he emerges as a formidable rival to the gangster family and its “fixer” Harry Da Souza (Tom Hardy), who helps their problems disappear when things go awry.

Speaking to the Press Association, Flynn said his character will try to “take over the Harrigan empire” amid “lots of shifting loyalties”.

“It was quite daunting to step into this world, having watched season one and thought it was fantastic,” Flynn said.

The South African-born star added that his character was “bringing all this agitation and chaos”, and continued: “I had so much fun. Everyone was so nice, and it’s lovely coming into something that’s well established.

“You’re walking into a family that already exists, and so there’s that warmth, and the people are so nice.

“And my character is the new enemy for the Harrigans, and he’s this crazy agitator, so it was a lot of fun stirring stuff up.”

Hinting at his role in the new instalment of the show, which is executive produced by Guy Ritchie, Flynn said: “He’s brought in as somebody to challenge the Harrigans’ supremacy via Toby Jones’s character – who comes in at the end of the first season.”

Jones, famed for Mr Bates Vs The Post Office, plays retired police detective Colin Tattersall, who is focused on taking down the crime family.

“He’s one of my favourite actors, and he’s got this amazing character as a broken copper,” he added.

Flynn continued: “What I’m trying to do is take over the Harrigan empire, so there’s times where I’m appealing to the family.

“There’s a shifting sense of loyalty. I’m playing with Harry, but also saying, ‘you and me, we’re the same, let’s work together’.

“So that’s really fun – and they are a match for each other in terms of intelligence. They’re drawn to each other.

“They can see something of themselves in the other one, and there’s this amazing series of showdowns between the two of them.

“As the series progresses, it gets more and more intense. They’re woven together.”

The forthcoming series will consist of 10 episodes, with the Harrigan family struggling to show a united front and Flynn’s character among the rising rivals and threats to their empire.

MobLand series two will premiere globally on Paramount+ on September 18.
