Reveal all of Najib’s house arrest terms, urges Bersatu

Bersatu has urged the government to reveal all the house arrest conditions imposed on former prime minister Najib Razak as part of his conditional pardon in his SRC International case.

Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali said these terms should be revealed in detail to Malaysians given the questions and concerns that arose following the pardon decision.

“It is important to reveal these details to avoid public anger and unrest that could threaten the integrity of the judiciary and public confidence in our legal system,” he said in a statement.

Azmin said the government should explain the legal framework, procedures, and criteria for house arrests, and whether other inmates could apply for the same “privilege”.

He maintained that Bersatu’s stand is that those convicted of corruption should be punished according to the law and the Federal Constitution, but Article 42 of the constitution accords the king with the power of pardon.

“However, Bersatu understands the questions that have risen among the people regarding the principle of equality before the law.

“The people deserve to have the confidence that one’s position, influence, or background should not provide for a separate set of punishments,” he said.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister’s Department announced that following a Federal Territories Pardons Board meeting, the king decided to allow Najib to serve the remainder of a six-year jail sentence at his home provided he pays his RM50 million fine in his SRC International case.

Under the conditional pardon, Najib will serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to the payment of the fine.

Najib, 73, has been serving a six-year sentence at Kajang prison after the board halved his original 12-year sentence in February 2024. The original RM210 million fine was also reduced to RM50 million.
