Beverage entrepreneur Mike Repole announced on X last week that he had bought 1M shares of Churchill Downs Inc. (CHDN). His Churchill Downs (CHDN) stake is roughly 1.43%, although Repiole indicated that he may buy more. Shares of Churchill Downs (CHDN) rose more than 6% on Friday off the news.
The reported stake is not enough to trigger SEC reporting requirements and does not give Repole operational control or a guaranteed board seat. For comparison, CEO Bill Carstanjen owns about 2.4% of Churchill Downs (CHDN).
Repole called the Kentucky Derby a major asset, pointing to its peak TV audience of 24.4M. Looking ahead, he wants better marketing, new ideas, and more accountability across racing. He also criticized the “Old Guard” racing groups that he says have held the sport back. Repole said he looks forward to working with Carstanjen and the board, and Churchill Downs said it welcomes his “significant investment”.
Repole made his fortune in drinks. He helped build Vitaminwater, which sold to Coca-Cola (KO) for $4 billion, and BodyArmor, which Coca-Cola bought for $5.6B. He is also well known in horse racing as the owner of Repole Stable and a breeder. Outside racing, he co-owns the United Football League.
Weighing in on the development, Jefferies analyst David Katz said the firm believes the combination of an engaged new shareholder, ongoing premium inventory expansion, and increasingly sophisticated revenue optimization supports the long-term earnings growth story on Churchill Downs (CHDN). Katz and his team have a bullish view of CHDN based on the value embedded within its unique asset base.
