Anwar returns to Cheruk Tok Kun for final farewell to late brother Idrus

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Sept 25 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today paid his last respects to his elder brother, Idrus, who passed away yesterday evening.

Anwar arrived at his family home in Cheruk Tok Kun here at 11.05 am with his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

He was greeted by family members and members of the public who had gathered to pay their last respects to the deceased.

The prime minister also shook hands with residents and members of the public before entering the house, and appeared emotional while reciting Surah Yasin beside his brother’s remains.

Also present were Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Dr Mohamad Abdul Hamid; Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Steven Sim; Penang Mufti Associate Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Sukki Othman; Penang police chief Datuk Dennis Lim Kwang Kheng; and political leaders from various parties.

Idrus, 83, died in his sleep at his residence in Cheruk Tok Kun at 6.10 pm yesterday.

He will be laid to rest at the Cheruk Tok Kun Bawah Muslim Cemetery after Friday prayers today.

The second of eight siblings, the late Idrus leaves behind his wife, four children and 10 grandchildren.

He was a former teacher and had served as headmaster of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Permatang Bertam, Kepala Batas, and SK Stowell, Bukit Mertajam. — Bernama
