Warning! Spoilers ahead for NCIS: Origins season 3, episode 3, "Shimmy Shimmy Ya."In the middle of NCIS: Origins season 3, the prequel officially confirms Lala Dominguez's fate in modern time with an unexpected revelation. CBS's fall 2026 lineup has dominated the ratings competition in the first few weeks of the cycle. While Luke Grimes Marshals and Justin Hartley's Tracker lead the pack in terms of viewership, the NCIS franchise is also doing well, with all three of its ongoing series seeing a boost in terms of interest and actual numbers.

For NCIS: Origins season 3, its story is improved upon by the full-time return of Mark Harmon as Leroy Jethro Gibbs. It's part of a bigger arc this season that started when he was attacked in his home in Alaska. As Old Gibbs finds answers in the present timeline, his younger self, played by Austin Stowell, continues to solve cases with Mike Frank's Camp Pendleton team while also gradually developing a proper romance with Lala. NCIS: Origins season 3, episode 3, "Shimy Shimy Ya," however, drops a major information bomb about Mariel Molino's character that seals her contemporary fate.

Harmon's Gibbs Confirms That Lala Is Dead

Old Gibbs and Ellie in NCIS: Origins CBS

As with the previous episodes in the current cycle, NCIS: Origins season 3, episode 3 starts and ends in the present time with Harmon's Gibbs. Much of the hype leading to the outing was focused on Emily Wickersham's return to the franchise as Ellie Bishop — a reunion that was oddly revealed in a trailer, which seemed odd at first. As it turns out, it was because NCIS: Origins was hiding a bigger revelation by finally confirming that Lala is dead. Old Gibbs himself reveals this to his former subordinate, after Ellie raises the possibility that she may be the other target by the same perpetrators that tried killing him.

The moment is brief, but NCIS: Origins, impressively, is able to share more details about Lala's death. Firstly, Old Gibbs reveals that Lala has died a long time ago, although he doesn't give a specific timeline. Secondly, he also confirms how she died when Ellie asks whether she was KIA (killed in action). Harmon's character, surprisingly, answers, saying that she was killed in a plane crash. Unfortunately, he doesn't go into specifics about the flight or where she was going then, but it's clear that Old Gibbs is still haunted by it.

What Lala's Fate Revelation Means For The Rest Of NCIS: Origins

Smartly, NCIS: Origins gives just enough information about Lala's future that the story is able to move forward without limiting what else they can do with Molino's character in the prequel. Because there's no definite timeline, she could have lived up until Gibbs' retirement. After all, "a long time" is subjective. The same goes with the manner of her death. Because it's a plane crash, it isn't tied to anything specific from the real world or NCIS canon, which, once again, offers the show a wide range of possibilities. Showrunner David J. North has previously revealed that he has decided about what Lala's future is going to be, so this is likely strategic storytelling on his end.

Now that Lala's modern fate is sealed, NCIS: Origins can shift focus onto other things when tackling her story. Obviously, there's her brewing romance with Gibbs, which remains to be at the core of the prequel. That said, it's curious if Harmon's character's ongoing debacle that led to him reuniting with Director Tony Dinozzo Jr. still has anything to do with Lala, despite her fate. Beyond that, it would also be great to see more of her personal character development, especially as one of the best agents around during NCIS's founding period.
