Works minister Alexander Nanta Linggi said the government will pay highway concessionaires an estimated RM20.11 million in compensation after announcing a 50% toll discount for two days in conjunction with Deepavali.
PETALING JAYA:

The government has announced a 50% toll discount for two days in conjunction with Deepavali, which falls on Sunday.

The discount will take effect at midnight tomorrow (Nov 6) and end at 11.59pm on Saturday (Nov 7), said works minister Alexander Nanta Linggi.

“This initiative is aimed at reducing travel costs for Malaysians returning to their hometowns or visiting family during the festive period,” he said in a statement.

The discount will apply to Class 1 private vehicles at all toll plazas and Class 2 vehicles on the Penang Bridge.

However, it will not cover the Sultan Iskandar Building toll plaza on the North-South Expressway or the Tanjung Kupang toll plaza on the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link.

Nanta said the government would pay highway concessionaires an estimated RM20.11 million in compensation, subject to traffic data verification.

He advised motorists to plan their journeys early, ensure they have sufficient balance in their Touch ‘n Go cards or e-wallets, observe speed limits and maintain a safe distance between vehicles.

Motorists are also encouraged to check traffic updates and highway incidents through the authority’s official channels.

He wished the Hindu community a happy Deepavali, saying the festival should further strengthen unity and harmony among Malaysians.
