Indian envoy: BRICS agenda aligns with Indonesia bilateral focus

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indian Ambassador to Indonesia Sandeep Chakravorty said the priority agenda for India's 2026 BRICS Chairmanship strongly aligns with efforts to deepen bilateral ties between New Delhi and Jakarta.

"In specific terms, we are finding greater convergence between the BRICS priorities and our bilateral agenda," Chakravorty told ANTARA in a written interview on Friday.

India's chairmanship this year is built on four pillars: resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability.

The resilience pillar focuses on health, agriculture, food security, energy, disaster risk reduction, and supply chains. Meanwhile, the innovation pillar addresses the development of startups, micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), science and technology, research and development, digital public infrastructure, and artificial intelligence.

Furthermore, the cooperation pillar highlights issues of multilateralism, global governance reform, and practical cooperation in development. The sustainability pillar prioritizes the implementation of clean and renewable energy, climate action, as well as adaptation and sustainable consumption.

"We see enormous possibilities (for expanding bilateral cooperation) in the development of digital public infrastructure, green transition and renewables, and, of course, social sector projects," the ambassador noted.

Chakravorty said that harmonizing the multilateral BRICS agenda with the bilateral interests of its member states is a primary objective of India's leadership this year.

Beyond consolidating past achievements and integrating new members, New Delhi aims to translate the 2026 agenda into practical, result-oriented, and sustainable cooperation, he added.

BRICS, initially an economic bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has recently expanded its membership to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia. Jakarta officially joined the organization on January 6, 2025.

The 18th BRICS Summit, themed "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability," will be held this weekend, September 12–13, in New Delhi.
