Matibag: P7B flood projects in Duterte district went to 1 contractor

MANILA, Philippines — National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Melvin Matibag revealed on Thursday that the bureau discovered that P7 billion worth of flood-control projects in the district of Davao City Rep. Paolo “Pulong” Duterte were awarded to a single contractor.

“The figure we are looking at was a bit low: It was P1.9 billion in projects awarded to a contractor; it was actually P7 billion from 2018 to 2024,” Matibag said in an interview on Thursday.

Matibag cited records from the Commission on Audit (COA).

Matibag earlier said Genesis88 Construction Inc. secured P1.9 billion worth of flood-control projects in Duterte’s district.

He said the contractor is close to the Duterte family.

The NBI director said the bureau will issue subpoenas for documents from the COA to further shed light on the investigation.

Matibag initially said that they had seen some “red flags” in 47 flood-control projects in Duterte’s district. He later clarified that the number of projects being investigated had increased to 51.

Public Works Regional Director Juby Cordon arrived at the bureau on Thursday to comply with her subpoena amid the bureau’s flood-control probe.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Davao Region also submitted 10 boxes of documents to the bureau. /das
