Gauteng weather: Thunderstorms and colder temperatures set to hit this weekend

After a warm start to the week, Gauteng is set for a noticeable drop in temperatures, with thunderstorms and rain expected across the province this weekend, according to the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

The change in weather is linked to a cut-off low-pressure system that is developing over the western interior on Thursday. The system is expected to bring a significant shift in weather conditions across several provinces as it moves eastwards.

Cold, wet and windy conditions are expected across parts of the Western Cape and Northern Cape from Thursday into Friday. SAWS has warned that rainfall in parts of the Western Cape could become disruptive, with localised flooding possible, particularly over the south-eastern parts of the province.

As the cut-off low moves eastwards over the weekend, temperatures are expected to drop noticeably across several provinces.

Scattered to widespread showers and thundershowers, accompanied by windy conditions, are expected across parts of the Free State, Gauteng, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, as well as the eastern parts of the North West.

These conditions are expected to persist from Friday through Sunday, with further weather impacts possible as the system moves across the country.

For Gauteng residents, a much cooler weekend is on the cards.

Johannesburg has a 60% chance of thunderstorms on Friday, with temperatures expected to reach a high of around 21°C.

Temperatures are expected to fall further over the weekend, with highs dropping into the high teens on Saturday and Sunday, while rain and cool conditions are expected across the province.

No thunderstorms are expected in Gauteng next week but temperatures are expected to be cool to warm.
