Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has backed Kylian Mbappé as his choice for the Ballon d’Or, insisting that no player performed better individually than the French forward during the year.
Courtois, speaking to DAZN on Wednesday, said Mbappé’s lack of major trophies was the main factor that could work against him in the race for football’s most prestigious individual award.
“Individually, no player was better than him this year, but sadly, we didn’t win any trophies,” Courtois said.
The Belgian goalkeeper also compared Mbappé’s campaign with that of Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, noting that the Spanish winger’s success in winning trophies could strengthen his claim for the award.
“Lamine Yamal had a worse World Cup than Mbappé, but he won the title and won the league,” he added.

Courtois’ comments highlight the ongoing debate over whether individual performances or team achievements should carry greater weight in determining the Ballon d’Or winner.
Mbappé has established himself as one of the leading figures in world football, while Yamal has continued to attract attention for his performances for Barcelona and Spain.
The Ballon d’Or recognises the outstanding individual footballer of the year, with performances, achievements and overall impact often forming part of the discussion surrounding the award.
