The Rings Of Power's "Final Shot Has Not Changed" Since Season 1, Confirms Creator

EXCLUSIVE: The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is sticking to its plan.
Prime Video's ambitious fantasy series was originally pitched with a five-season plan. In 2022, the same year that season 1 debuted, co-creator and co-showrunner J.D. Payne teased that The Rings of Power's final shot had already been decided, explaining that "we even know what our final shot of the last episode is going to be. The rights that Amazon bought were for a 50-hour show. They knew from the beginning that was the size of the canvas – this was a big story with a clear beginning, middle and end. There are things in the first season that don’t pay off until Season 5.”
In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley during The Rings of Power season 3 junket, co-creator and co-showrunner Patrick McKay was asked if plans for the final shot and series ending are still the same four years later. McKay confirmed the last shot has not been changed and that the show is still adhering to the overall original plan.
This includes Rings of Power season 3 featuring Celeborn's return, Sauron forging the One Ring, the war between the Elves and Sauron, and the story becoming increasingly more dark and psychological. That being said, changes are sometimes made for the sake of creative discovery and authenticity. Check out McKay's comments below:
I'll answer it two different ways. One way is, so my co-showrunner and I, J.D. Payne, from our first conversations about this world and what we might want to do with the show, that started nine years ago. We had a plan for five seasons. We knew in season three that Sauron would make the One Ring, Celeborn, Galadriel's long lost husband, would return. It would be the War of the Elves and Sauron. The show would darken and become more psychological. This was all part of the plan, and it's a plan that's holding up wonderfully. But to answer the other way, you also always want to leave room for discovery. The work that we do on set every single day is looking for authentic moments, and sometimes you have to change the plan at the last moment. But all that said, no, the final shot has not changed.
The Rings of Power has not been officially renewed yet for seasons 4 or 5, so it is not guaranteed that the planned final shot will happen, but the series is highly unlikely to be canceled. Season 1 remains the biggest premiere in Prime Video's history and season 2 is in the top 5 of the streamer's most-watched returning shows.
The series also has an 84% Tomatometer score and The Rings of Power season 3 first reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with critics already hailing it as the best season yet. Amazon has also invested a tremendous amount of money and time into the show at this point, and it only makes sense to have McKay and Payne fulfill the rest of the rest of their plan, including the final shot, especially if the record-breaking viewership continues.

Choose the movie with the higher Rotten Tomatoes score.
While all details about the last shot remain under wraps, season 5 will presumably be centered on the War of the Last Alliance, the final stand that the Elves, Men, and Dwarves take against Sauron and that will conclude the Second Age in The Lord of the Rings timeline. Many of the key characters from this battle are already at the forefront of the show, including Sauron (Charlie Vickers), Isildur (Maxim Baldry), Elendil (Lloyd Owen), Elrond (Robert Aramayo), and Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker).
In terms of when audiences will be able to see the final shot, it likely won't be until 2030. After season 1 premiered in 2022, season 2 followed in 2024, and now season 3 is arriving in 2026. If this bi-annual release tradition continues, season 4 will be in 2028, and it will be another four years from now before the last episodes come out.
Along with Sauron, Isildur, Elendil, Elrond, Gil-galad, and Jamie Campbell Bower making his debut as Celeborn, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power cast in season 3 features Galadriel (Morfydd Clark), Gandalf (Daniel Weyman), Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova), Durin IV (Owain Arthur), Disa (Sophia Nomvete), Míriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson), Pharazôn (Trystan Gravelle), the Dark Wizard (Ciarán Hinds), an Orc named Marnûkh (Adam Young) who has defected from Sauron, and Simon Pegg voicing a Balrog.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power begins with a four-episode premiere on November 11 on Prime Video.
