Emmerdale – why Jimmy King has been killed off after 22 years

The rumours were true – Emmerdale has killed off Jimmy King after an impressive 22-year run in the show.

Nick Miles' final scenes aired in Thursday night's episode (27 August) as his hapless character lost his life during Joe Tate and Dawn Fletcher's disastrous wedding day.

For those who follow spoilers closely, Jimmy's departure was no real surprise as the details were leaked some time ago. However, if you prefer to avoid knowing what happens in advance, it may have been a curveball to see such a long-standing character go.

Here, we're taking a deep dive into how this soap shock unfolded…

The early story leak

In mid-May, news broke that Nick Miles' contract wasn't being renewed by Emmerdale and that he'd been informed by bosses earlier in the year.

At the time, ITV didn't comment on Nick's departure as it has a long-standing policy of not confirming most Emmerdale exits in advance. The show's producers prefer storyline developments to be a surprise, especially when blowing the budget for big stunt weeks.

The early reports got many of the details right in advance, accurately predicting that Jimmy would be killed off in his final storyline.

At the time, show insiders pointed out that Jimmy's character was a loyal family man, so it was unlikely that he'd scarper from the village and leave his wife and kids behind.

This seemingly inspired the show's writers and story team to create a final exit rather than an open-ended one, which sadly shut the door on Jimmy for good... sob!

One aspect of the story that perhaps played out differently than expected was the involvement of Patsy Kensit as returning character Sadie King – Jimmy's ex-wife.

Reports had tipped Sadie to be closely involved in Jimmy's exit, but we now know that they haven't shared any scenes together after all. So it appears the plan was always for Sadie to play a role in the aftermath of Jimmy's departure, rather than the exit episodes themselves.

Why lose Jimmy?

The news of Jimmy's departure has been divisive among fans, with some viewers questioning why the show has to lose such a well-loved community figure.

Some reports have linked his exit to rumoured budget cuts at Emmerdale, although it's unclear whether this is true as the soap (unsurprisingly) doesn't comment on cast contracts or financial decisions.

We have seen Emmerdale wave goodbye to other characters over the past couple of years – including some long-servers like Leyla, Brenda and Noah who'd become light on storylines. However, the overall cast numbers have arguably remained relatively stable as newcomers like Kev, Lewis, Serena and DS Ramsden have also arrived.

Fans had noticed some tell-tale signs that the writers were perhaps running out of ideas for Jimmy, as he'd featured less in the past couple of years. We hardly ever saw the Kings' home life and their kids had disappeared from storylines for over a year.

Plus, with so much talk from producers of rebuilding classic Emmerdale clans like the Tates and Sugdens, there hadn't been much mention of the Kings.

While we can only speculate, perhaps it was a combination of factors – budget restraints, fewer storyline ideas, and a drive to take Nicola's character in a new direction without Jimmy around.

What happens next?

Emmerdale's big week isn't over just yet, as Friday's edition is still to come and there's also a Sunday episode coming up to round off the week. We'll have to stay tuned to see whether tragedy strikes for anyone else, or if the other characters involved make it out unscathed.

We know that Jimmy and Nicola's kids have been back on set more regularly recently, which will allow Emmerdale to explore the family's grief.

Patsy Kensit's return as Sadie is also on the way, as she's been back filming on the show's set for several weeks.

Emmerdale's producer Laura Shaw recently told us: "It's Sadie King – of course she's coming back with an agenda. I can't say too much more, but the reason that Sadie comes back, and the secret she comes back with, is going to be absolutely shocking.

"It's whether everything is quite as it seems – we will see as the story progresses. But it's going to be pretty big and pretty shocking."
