Ariana Grande Shares Studio Footage From ‘The Day Petal Was Born’: See How the Song Took Root

Ariana Grande‘s song “Petal” didn’t just bloom overnight. In a newly shared video of the pop star working in the studio with producers Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh, she shows how the trio meticulously grew the track from the ground up.

The clip, shared Thursday (Sept. 17), opens with Grande chilling on a couch in the studio, sporting a pale pink knit head wrap. Martin sits next to her with a guitar, while Salmanzadeh mans the computer on the other side of the room.

After listening to one take of Grande mumbling words as she tests out vocal melodies and rhythms over the instrumental track, Martin — making silly faces at the camera — declares, “Sick!”

“That’s pretty!” Grande agrees. “I like those notes.”

“the day petal was born,” the Grammy winner captioned the clip.

Grande, of course, would later add completed lyrics to the melodies she established with the production team, and the finished product would turn into the title track of her eighth studio album, petal. The LP debuted atop the Billboard 200 in August and features the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit “Hate That I Made You Love Me.”

The Wicked actress was in the middle of her Eternal Sunshine Tour when petal dropped. Shortly prior to and after its release, she began incorporating songs from the full-length into the trek’s setlist, recording live versions that Grande later packaged into a live album released after the tour ended in September.

She’s now entering a period of downtime that was announced before the tour’s conclusion, though she does plan to fulfill press obligations for Focker-in-Law, as Billboard confirmed earlier in the month.
