Tracker Officially Changes Russell's Comeback Role For Season 4

Antonella Gugliersi (she/them) has been a feature writer for Screen Rant since 2021. While studying for her bachelor’s in Economics & Management, they started writing about movies and TV shows for Turin-based The Unconventional Mag. After a brief internship at TPI, she decided she wanted to pursue journalism and graduated with a degree in International Journalism from Brunel University.

Warning! SPOILERS ahead about Tracker season 4, episode 2.Russell Shaw has always been a key character in Tracker, and details of his return in season 4 have finally been revealed. Big brother to Tracker’s protagonist Colter Shaw, Russell cast a big shadow on the CBS TV show even before he appeared for the first time in Tracker season 1, episode 12, as Colter had avoided him for years, believing him responsible for their father’s murder. Their relationship eventually got better after Colter gave Russell a chance to explain himself, and their bond only became stronger after Colter found out who the culprit was behind Ashton’s murder.

Their closer relationship inevitably brought Colter and Russell to collaborate on cases together, whether those came from a client of Colter’s or someone from Russell’s past. More often than not, though, Colter and Russell teaming up meant that the crime drama was closer than before to revealing something new about the Shaw family mystery, which Tracker season 3 almost completely solved.

Although the findings in Tracker season 3’s finale partially redeemed Ashton Shaw by revealing that he was killed trying to stop a government program he had taken part in years before, the episode also set up further mysteries. Indeed, Russell getting from McIntyre a file on Colter detailing what Ashton had subjected him to not only set up another ominous mystery focusing solely on Ashton and Colter, but it also kickstarted Russell’s next storyline away from Colter, on a mission he wanted to keep secret from his brother. This is the context Russell returns to in Tracker season 4.

Russell's Tracker Season 4 Comeback Story Is Officially Revealed

Jensen Ackles is set to return as Russell Shaw in Tracker season 4, episode 5, “Need to Know.” The official synopsis reads as follows: “After a military contractor’s wife and daughter are kidnapped, Colter discovers Russell is investigating a related lead. The Shaw brothers join forces to uncover a high-stakes cover-up.” Tracker season 4, episode 5 is written by Brian McCauley Johnson and Jai Franklin Sarki, directed by David M. Barrett, and will air on CBS on Sunday, November 1, 2026.

The story that warrants Russell’s return in Tracker season 4 treads a path similar to those of previous appearances by the older Shaw brother. Like several times before, a case is the reason that unites Colter and Russell, and Tracker has already proved time and time again how well the two brothers work together. What sticks out is nevertheless the emphasis put on Colter discovering Russell following a related lead rather than Russell letting him know he is in the area.

It’s unclear whether Russell’s reticence in letting Colter know his whereabouts is related to what he found out in Tracker season 3’s ending or the path that discovery led him on after accepting McIntyre’s job. However, Colter already started to find Russell’s silence unusual in Tracker season 4, episode 2. Discovering Russell was close and didn’t contact him will only make the entire situation stranger for Colter, prompting him to wonder what went wrong the last time they saw each other that pushed Russell to stay away.

Russell's Tracker Season 4 Comeback Role Is Different From Its Original Version

What’s even more puzzling is that Russell’s Tracker season 4 appearance wasn’t supposed to follow this direction. According to what Justin Hartley revealed during a panel at Televerse 26 in August 2026 (via TV Line), Russell’s return was supposed to be prompted by a request for help to Colter. Hartley shared, "When we find him this season... he needs a favor from Colter and from his skill set. So the two brothers work together to solve this problem that Russell's found himself in — and one of his friends, too."

What Hartley revealed about Russell’s return has an entirely different premise from Tracker season 4, episode 5’s official synopsis. Indeed, while Russell may not have wanted to rely on Colter for help, he needed his brother and his skills, leading to working together again. Instead, the official synopsis for “Need to Know” goes out of its way to pass on the message that in the midst of investigating a case, Colter discovers Russell working on a related lead.

Tracker season 4, episode 2 already setting up Colter’s confusion about Russell’s behavior makes it possible that he will only have more questions by the time season 4, episode 5 comes. Colter’s chance discovery of his brother also puts Russell in a very delicate situation, as Colter presumably doesn’t know that Russell left McIntyre alive in Tracker season 3’s ending. The last thing Colter learned directly from his brother was his intention to close the Chrono Stasis chapter by going after the person who created the project, and after that, Russell virtually disappeared without even saying goodbye.

What Russell's New Tracker Season 4 Comeback Story Means

Up until Tracker season 3’s finale, the CBS crime drama had gone above and beyond to fix Colter and Russell’s relationship. Even if Russell appeared only in seven Tracker episodes in total, the closeness between the two brothers was palpable every time they reunited in any given episode after their reconciliation. Russell keeping his distance after Tracker season 3’s finale would worry anyone, but especially Colter, as he knew how it was when the two brothers were estranged, and he also realized nothing had happened to warrant that change, at least nothing that he witnessed.

Finding out by chance that Russell’s investigation and his own have leads in common will inevitably bring Colter some peace, as at least he would be once again in Russell’s presence. However, it’s just as likely that having to deal with his brother will also raise questions, as investigating something together makes it more difficult for Russell to avoid answering to Colter.

Colter and Russell reuniting may also involve Reenie in the matter. After all, Tracker season 3 ended with Russell’s request to Reenie to tell Colter he had to go, and a promise to explain what prompted his decision. By Tracker season 4, episode 2, it’s unknown what happened during that talk between Reenie and Colter, as we have yet to see them interact directly, given that Randy usually updates Colter on Reenie’s whereabouts.

Even if Tracker season 4, episode 5’s case doesn’t revolve around the mysterious job McIntyre sent Russell on, the circumstances of his departure will inevitably come up, especially as Colter has yet to hear directly from Russell in any capacity. It’s unlikely that Russell will reveal what Ashton did to Colter, but he will have to at least partially explain himself. This leads to Tracker season 4 partly following a well-trodden path, as a close family member will once again keep an important secret from Colter.
